Can a cat eat too much cat grass (not regular grass) ? Are there any side effects ?

Yes it can, and it will puke. :p

Our Mo loves cat grass. We got him some because he was interested in the grassy plants that sprouted from my birds' discarded sprouts, and we wanted to leave it out in the living room to get some green in the apartment. He gorged on it and puked two days in a row, so we took it away. In our case, he's also a dehydrated kitty (even on a watered down wet diet) with small kidneys, so all that cat grass also exacerbated his constipation and he wound up getting poop stuck to his bum that he had to scoot off on the floor. Said poop had grass fibers balled up in it.

Grass is meant for either regurgitation or roughage, so it can add fiber or it can help expel anything unpleasant the cat may have eaten.

My cat is completely uninterested in eating the grass, but for some reason he likes to pull the entire tuft of grass, soil and all, out of the container and leave it on the floor. I know cats are often inscrutable, but what bugs me about this is that he seems to enjoy nibbling on the rest of the plants in the apartment. I've had to move some plants up and out of reach. They're not toxic, it's just that it can't be good for him to eat them.

I didn't know they could gorge themselves on cat grass though, so thanks for pointing that out. Maybe leave a few clippings in your cat's bowl and keep the rest out of reach?

Unfortunately, he's completely uninterested in clippings! He likes being able to bite and pull at it right from the dirt - I think he likes that more than actually eating it. It's out on the balcony right now because of the nice weather, and we only planted about 1/4 of the wheat grass seeds we bought for him with the idea in mind that he'll uproot and destroy most of what we plant for him at any time. Once we get his diet worked out for the long term, we'll bring the grass back in for a couple hours at a time and let him enjoy it in small doses.
