I took Sora to the vet last Friday because she had stopped eating. They did an X-ray and discovered she was really constipated. They gave her an enema and prescribes her to take lactulose 2ml twice/day. She had diarrhea on Friday night and twice on Saturday. I woke up Sunday morning and she had diarrhea through the night. After 3 baths, I decided to reduce her dosage of lactulose on Saturday to 1 ml and started feeding her pumpkin with wet food. Then she didn't poop for 2 days and I was getting worried. I upped her dosage of lactulose back to 2 ml/2day. She finally pooped a somewhat normal bowel movement on Tuesday night, and I was so excited! But now we're on Thursday night and she hasn't pooped again. I'm getting really worried that she's still constipated and wondering if I should take her back to the vet. I just can't afford to spend what I did last time at the vet. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I just want her to feel better!

You were right about the Miralax! She finally went this afternoon after I gave her Miralax a few hours earlier. Thanks again for the advice.

Hi I am new to the site my boy Tigger has constipation issues he can only eat grain free food. When I first took him to the vet he was 7lb and ex-ray showed bad constipation. Now he ways 13lb he is on miralax  twice a day. Vet said try pumpkin that did not work Gerber sweet potato works for him. Now there are times when he does have to go to the vet for enema when he gets a lump by his back end. You should ask your vet is there any health reason causing this like my boy does. If this a new problem with your girl.

You can also use Slippery Elm Bark.  I know a lot of renal kitty owners (constipation is common in renal failure kitties) who use successfully.

Glad the Miralax worked for you too!  Easily available and not expensive, and you can save your vet visits for the occasional problem that may come up later.

This is a new issue for her. It started about a week and a 1/2 ago. When I took her to the vet for not eating is when they did the X-ray and saw she was blocked up. After a week if inconsistent bowel movements, I gave her the Miralax yesterday afternoon and she had a good BM yesterday evening. I gave her some more with her dinner this evening and nothing yet. I'm just wondering when she will begin to have daily BM's again. I know it's normal for her to go every 2 to 3 days, so I'm hoping the Miralax will help the process. I may start giving her 2 doses/day, but I worry she may not be able to go without it.

Rather, I know it's not normal for her to have BM's every 2-3 days.

Thanks for this suggestion. I'll look into the Elm Bark if things don't get better.

I wouldn't worry too much about whether she will be able to go withut it since it's inexpensive and easy to get.  If she needs it twice a day in order for her bowels to perform daily and it produces normal stool, not diarrhea like the lactulose, that doesn't seem to be a problem.  I have human friends who need it and take it twice a day.  Not my problem, but it is for some.

Looks like the Miralax worked for her again this morning. I'm going to continue to give it to her once a day as long as she's responding to it. Thought you all might like to know. Thanks again for all the suggestions and comments!
