Hi-- I'm new to these forums and have a question that relates to cats & new carpeting.

I just purchased a cat tree that is a combination carpet/sisal. I hopefully will get to put it together tonight--but I am wondering if the 'new carpet' smell of the perches and posts could result in inappropriate urination?

I've only had my 4 month old kittens for the last 2 months. They have a carpet/sisal post that has a carpet base. I haven't had any problems with this, but I don't recall how "new" that post smelled when we got it. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

I moved your post to its own thread because it was a little different than the other carpet thread. I hope you don't mind!

I have never had problems bringing in new carpet, rugs, or sisal. The person who wrote about her fear of spraying the new carpet was concerned because her cats had sprayed in response to change in the past.

If your cats have never sprayed, I wouldn't worry at all! However, make sure that in the next month or two that you have your cats spayed or neutered so that they do not develop spraying problems in the future.

I've also never had problems with new carpet and spraying. Consider rubbing the new tree down with catnip. It will attract them to the tree.
