I am trying to figure out what I am going to do with my degree. I want to be an Elementary Education teacher. The problem is I can't figure out what school I want to go to next year-it's either going to be University of Houston, or University of Houston-Downtown. An advisor told me that I would probably have to get my liberal arts degree and then get a teacher certification (UH-Downtown). I am not sure if it is the best way to go. Should I go to UH central campus and do it the 'normal' way or should I pursue my liberal arts degree and get a teacher certification at UH-Downtown. What is the difference? Anyone else a teacher?

I'm not a teacher, but my mom is, and so was like 75% of my graduating class, and you need an education degree. Don't do the liberal arts.. My advice is to dual with elem ed and then another subject (and if that's not possible, try to choose a miner).. A lot of people do spanish, english, math, biology, whatever. Even if you choose not to do that, definitely DEFINITELY go for a B.S. in Education because soooo many people are graduating with that degree, and if you were a school board would you rather hire someone with a liberal arts degree or an education degree?

UHD does Urban Education which is Bachelor of Arts in Humanities. I am still confused. I just applied to it, and now am I afraid that I wasted another $30 for applications!!

Why not call the local school and see which they would prefer you have to become gainfully employed in their system. I am sure you could arrange 15 minutes with the principal. This person could then also become your mentor (time permitting).

My wife obtained a BA in Psychology with a minor in Social Work, and 5 years later is still unable to use them to find work.

Work with your local school. A little volunteering will give you a headfull of the trials of the job, and some of the joys as well.

Thanks for the input. Volunteering right now would take up my time for studying. I work 50+ hours a week and trying to hold down 7 credit hours for school. I did though talk to my aunt who has been teaching for 15 years and she gave me some great advice, now all I have to do is talk to my mother-in-law who was once a teacher and talk to an adviser who I have an appointment with on next Thursday. I was so confused I was crying on the phone with my aunt because being so close but so far away from being finished it so stressful...knowing that I can easily make more money and doing the thing I want to do for the rest of my life is within my reach...is just so difficult when things like this pop up!
