hi guys! i was just wondering if anyone could offer any insight about my cats fatness. personally, i consider him to be a big-boned cat, but someone said he was huge the other day and it is bothering me! he is an orange tabby named lemon, about 10 years old or so (not 100% sure about that), is about 17 inches long from nose to bum, and he weighs 15 pounds. do i need to take him to the vet?

Hi lemon-

The best one to determine the weight of your cat would be your vet. It also depends on the breed, or cross- breed to determine weight. For example Maine Coons can grow up to 22 pounds. But the safest bet would be a vet visit.

Welcome to the site! I've heard one way to tell is to lightly run your fingers down the sides of your cat. You should be able to feel his ribs, but not protruding (obviously). If you have to push to feel his ribs, then he's overweight.

But Mary Anne is right. The best one to determine if kitty needs a diet (and what that diet should be) is the vet.

I'm going to move this to the Health and Nutrition Forum for you.
