Hypoallergenic cat litter for "allergic" cat

My cat is allergic to dust mites. Clay cat litter makes him sneeze. I tried corn cob based, but he was so itchy. His allergies definitely did not improve any!

Yesterday I switched to wheat based cat litter and vacuumed the house. Today my cat somehow got his E-collar off, and ripped his face open, although that may be independent of the cat litter. He has been wearing an E collar for months.

I need something low dust, that all my cats can use. They have pine pellets but my cats don't bury their messes, as they don't like pellets.

Any ideas?

Have you tried the walnut based litter by Blue Buffalo? It's pretty low on the dust side of things. I haven't used it myself, but I've heard good things! Crystal based litter is also very low in dust, however it doesn't clump so it can be a pain to clean out.

If the litter box has a hood, you can always remove that to encourage more "air flow" of the litter box. Do you use an air purifier? You could place it beside the litter box to control air particles after kitty uses the litter box.

Best of luck!

If you try the Blue Buffalo litter be sure to get the Multi-Cat clumping litter. The regular clumping litter is ground very fine and is extremely dusty.

I know this may sound odd but what about putting a box down with a puppy pee pad in it? Maybe sprinkle it with a bit of litter to get them started? You'd obviously need to swap them a few times a day but the no scent, no dust and generally no litter to irritate his skin may help him. My dog uses a Potty Patch and my kitten has taken a liking to using it, not that I was trying to teach him to! I hope you can find a solution and your kitty (and you!) can find some relief.

Well, I've come up with a plan. I'm going to buy a lot of cat litter from chewy as they have free shipping.

I know corn cobs and wheat are definitely not going to work.

I'm planning to try:

Precious cat 99.9% dust free clumping

Yesterdays news (just since I haven't tried it yet)

Walnut based cat litter

Scoop away with crystals 99.9% dust free.

I also want to pick up some horse bedding pine pellets at Tractor supply. They are $6 for 40 lbs. I know there is a kind that you add water too and the pellets dissolve. Will have to see if they have that, as it may work well with the cats. My cats are NOT fans of pelleted litter!

With 6 cats, I go through litter quickly.  If the pine pellets don't work, I can throw them in the horse stalls.

Win-win.

Hopefully one of these things will help poor Pounce!

Sounds like a good plan

There not much you can do apart from trying different ones, until you find one that works for both Pounce and you :D

Good luck litter hunting and testing ;)

Try Dr Elsey's Respiratory Relief silica litter - I've been using this for my one cat with allergies and it has helped a lot.  My Vet also suggested giving her L-Lysine in her food and that also helped so that she didn't need her fall allergy shot.  Normally she gets two shots a year Fall and Spring using the L-Lysine helped a lot and the switch to the crystal litter also had done wonders for her.  Before when she would leave the open litter box tears would be pouring down her face and her nose was dripping, now the tearing is minimal and I believe it is the result of L-Lysine and the crystal litter.  Good luck
