Hi all, I'm new to this site and it's lovely to meet you all.

My Grandad had a cat whom lived very happily outdoors, she had a sheltered area built into the shed via a cat flap and lived to be 18 years old, she passed away a couple of years back.

I've always loved cats, they're one of my favourite animals, unfortunately my parents and sister have a different outlook and aren't fans of them. They don't like cats on sofas, kitchen counters, beds etc and generally not in the house, so when I asked for one the answer was no.

We do however have quite a reasonable sized shed which a cat could live in as a shelter and at night, and obviously throughout the day it would be able to go out as it pleases. I was wondering what thoughts on this were? The cat would have lovely beds, toys, enrichment and I would generally make it very homely and cosy for him.

Obviously I would hate to bring a cat into the family if it was going to be lonely or unhappy, which is why I came here to ask for advice. My parents are much more likely to agree to an outdoor cat.

Many thanks

Leah

Most rescues won't adopt to place an animal as an outdoor cat, but you might be able to find a rescue or group who has a "barn cat" to adopt or place.  Many times, though, these animals are feral and will need a lot of time and patience to tame into a people person cat.  Personally, I would wait until you're out on your own and can afford to have your own place and your own kitty.  In the meantime, look for ways to volunteer at a local shelter or even at your vet's office to get your "kitty fix".
