Hi, I havent been on this site for a while and I forgot my password so I created a new account. Anyway, does anybody have any idea what this could be on my cats nose/eyes?? (Please see pic below). I took him to the vets 10 days ago and was given some gel stuff to put on it. This isnt helping. He has scabs on the back of his neck aswell and a hugeee hard belly. He also wheezes a bit. The vet seems to think it will just go away but im convinced there is more too it. He is only a baby and I am worrying, although, he is eating/drinking fine and is still fairly playful.

What a beautiful cat! This looks pretty bad to me...has it spread/gotten smaller/changed in these 10 days? What did the vet do for her belly? That sounds like an even worse problem. Maybe another advisor can advise you besides the obvious second (or first?) opinion necessity. @catwoman707?

Yes I think I will take him to see another vet. Although he went back yesterday for a check up and saw a different vet and they said come back in 7 days again..I feel they just want my money and dont care about him. No one seems to know what it is. Poor Douglas :(

I really don't know a lot about skin issues but it looks like a fungal infection to me.  Have they done a scraping to try to figure out what it is.

Laura, you really need to find a competent cat Vet.........

A cat-only clinic might be the easiest place to start.....is there one nearby ?

The American Association of Feline Practitioners provides a search feature on their site: http://www.catvets.com/cat-owners/find-vets-and-practices Use the Search by Location, but don't check the red box "Show me only Cat Friendly Practices".

AAFP membership is no guarantee of competency.....but, it's sometimes a good starting point.

Some people rely on online Vet "reviews".......personally, I think that method's a crock, for many reasons........

Keep us posted !

It's really hard to tell in pics, although if you can post pics of belly and neck scabs up close that would be helpful too.

His nose area appears to be coming from eye drainage.

Can you describe it, used a washcloth with mild soap to see if it washes off at all?

Can you describe him clearly, like age, prior med history, where he came from, ever been sick/meds? Vaccines/fixed yet?

Thanks for the replies. I will check it out white shadow, cheers.
I thought it could have been from is eyes too but when I wiped it with a cloth it seemed to have hurt him. I think I will take him to another vet because this is so strange.
He is 12 weeks, my new rescue cat was pregnant and had a litter. He is the only one with this problem, his sisters are fine. Poor boy.

I think I know what it is! Douglas also has it on his chin. Below is a picture of Douglas, and a cat with feline acne.
Im sure it is feline acne. This is a pic of it.

I have compared it with Douglas and im convinced. I dont know why the vets wouldnt know though?

Feline acne is caused by using plastic food/water dishes, and only affects the chin area.

This is why the vet didn't mention it as a possibility, it is HIGHLY unlikely, I have dealt with probably as many cats through years in rescue and have NEVER seen cat acne on top of a cat's nose. Ever.

I still think it is irritation from eye discharge, any skin irritation on the face will look similar to acne, as it is showing an irritation, regardless of the cause.

Hi thanks for the reply. His chin has got to be feline acne. This doesnt explain his eyes and nose though. I agree with you about his eyes but im sure his chin is feline acne. Although when I tried to clean his nose it was red and sore and bits of fur came off so I stopped. I didnt realise it was hurting him. If it was discharge from the eye would it not wipe off? I feel so sorry for him.

It is highly likely that it is acne on his chin.

The eye drainage can cause irritation to his skin, almost like a mild burn type soreness, especially mentioning his fur coming off when you tried cleaning it.

The fur com,es out with irritated skin.

The drainage consists of something in his system that is not right, and not supposed to be there.

We have been advising another member here about her cat, who's drainage has actually eaten away at the surrounding areas where it drains, some sort of fungal infection exists with hers.

Impossible to know though without being tested.

Meanwhile I would put a topical ointment on the area, but stay clear of anything near his eyes! VERY important.

I'm trying to think what would be more appropriate, a topical antibiotic that will sort of repel the drainage like vaseline, but I don't think vaseline is the answer, it is not an antibiotic, and it will not allow his skin to breath either.

Perhaps desitin diaper rash ointment? Maybe start off applying a very small amt more towards his nose tip and rub it in most of the way, not leaving a thick coating, just a bit. Desitin works fast at healing so I would say to reapply it a few times in a day or so, and see if it doesn't help it look better.

This is merely putting a bandage on it though, you will still need to get to the root of what is going on with him and vet care is really the only proper way to find out.
