I am most sad to report that we were unable to save Maddie. The additional cost for a cat scan (no pun intended) and possible surgery after that would run another $3000+ over the $1500 we had already spent on her, and the additional stress of surgery on a 13-year old cat that now weighed 5 lbs did not bode well for her chances. For awhile it looked like she was recovering ok as long as we kept her pleural envelope clear. But after many trips to the vet and eight centesis treatments, her breathing became so labored that she could not survive except under oxygen. I saw "that look" in her eyes after that last centesis, and I knew I had to let her go. She died in my arms as the vet mercifully euthanized her on May 17th. I fully intend to see her again on the other side of the rainbow bridge, but in the meantime, a piece of me died right along with her. I once heard that grief is the price of love. That is true.
