The Nook Tablet bit the dust. Completely. Yesterday, I noticed that, even though I was charging the Nook while I was reading, the Nook said it was actually discharging....the battery was decreasing. Light was on on the charger, but there was nothing. Took it into B & N this morning and they tried 3 different chargers. Nothing. They think the charging port on the Tablet went bad. I had to go to B & N.com. Had a chat session....he couldn't help me. Had to call the number. OK.

Called the B & N number and talked to somebody there. They gave me 3 options, all of which involved buying a pre-owned Nook of whatever I wanted. The price was based on what I decided to buy. And I had to send in the old Nook. It's out of warranty by several years now. I'm not going with pre-owned; I mean, that's just asking for trouble sometimes.

So I bought a new 9-inch 32-GB Nook HD+. This way I can get my stuff from the "cloud", including my games. Til I get that old SD card (I think it's a 32 GB card, but I forget)  in the new Nook, I should almost have unlimited space for books now. I had a 20% off coupon I was able to use, so that helped a little bit.

I'm not happy, not by a long shot. But it's the only thing I could think of. I could have gone with a Kindle, I guess, but I already have the epub format for my books, which is not Kindle's format. I wasn't going there either. And I kind of feel like I'm getting ripped off. I treated this thing with kid gloves and I was always so careful with it. I only disconnected it from the computer when it said I could safely eject. I was always careful when I charged it. Something's wrong with it and all they want to do is give me a discount on a "new" pre-owned version?

Well, it is what it is. It should be here by Tuesday. I told Rick that I'd just start going back to the library, that I wouldn't buy another one. He wouldn't hear of it....he knows how much I depend on that thing.

A dead Nook!  I didn't think they were meant to die.

I'm with you on the library idea.. a good reason to just go back to a good book.

But I am very fond of my Kobo...

I didn't know they would die either and I'm not particularly happy about it. From what I found online, the older Nooks have this problem with those ports. Hopefully, they've since fixed the problem.

I hardly ever visit our library anymore since I got the Nook; there's something I love about being able to hit the e-library at 2:00 in the morning if I can't sleep. In fact, the last time I was over at our library, the librarian did a double-take when she saw it was me because it had been a while......I used to haunt our library regularly. I would walk over during lunch at work.

That's a shame. My Kindle II died three years to the day I got it. The little "joy stick" stopped working. Jamie had knocked a glass of water over on it about a year prior to its dying, and it hadn't been working 100% since then. I'd also used a cover that hooked onto the device, which I understand was a weak point fixed in later versions.

I'm sorry.

We have 2 Kindles.  I gave dh the one that's 2 years old over Christmas b/c I got Christmas money and got a Kindle Fire HDX.  And I have to admit I love that little tablet.  My sister tried to talk me into an iPad- but I like Amazon's browser better.  I love the fact too that they've got tons of free books.  Yeah- some of them can be bad- but hey- I'm paying nothing for them.

Winchester I use mine to take out books from the library too.  I love Overdrive.  I read The Goldfinch on my Kindle.  Had to wait a few months to get it, but it would have been the exact same wait if I'd put the physical book on hold.

I think there's a way to read epub books on your Kindle.  Which I'd like to know if there is one. There was one book I really wanted to read from the library but I had to take out the physical book.  The only copy they had of it was epub.

I have two Nooks, one I bought with a coupon, and a deal on gift certificates. The second I won last year.

I still use my iPad as my ereader. I use my iPad for everything. It drives my husband crazy.

sneakymom sneakymom If there's no DRM or you can remove it, you can use Calibre to convert the files.

I didn't know you could convert them, Tricia. Thank you for the link. My BIL didn't know either....his Nook died last year and he replaced it with a Kindle, only to have the Kindle die on him about six months later. He was able to get the Kindle replaced since it was still under warranty.

Sneakymom, Overdrive just rocks. There are times when a book will first come out and I happen to be online at the right time and......SCORE!

I always have five books on Hold and always have five books on my Nook. A book just came in for me last night, and I downloaded it, even though my Nook is dead. I figured if the new Nook gets here quickly, I have two weeks to read the book anyway, so it should work out. (It's not completely dead; I think it's down to 12%, which is red-lined. Rick tried and tried last night to get it to charge, but no luck. (I brought Doctor Sleep to work with me today to read during lunch, so I'm not bookless.)

I'm a little concerned about the games I have on my Nook, although I should be able to download them from the cloud to the new Nook without any trouble, too.

Thanks, Judy. I like books, too, but I was amazed at how quickly I got used to reading on the Nook.

Got the "It's been shipped!" email yesterday and they expect it to be here tomorrow. They put a $5 coupon in my account, so that combined with the $7 that I haven't spent yet, combined with a 20% off any item coupon that I have should get me something. My kids also gave me a $40 gift card to B & N last year for Christmas and I've not spent that yet either. The $5 is only good for five days, though, so I'll have to get it used and not forget about it. It's not a problem as I've always got a list of books I'd like to have. I was hoping to use it toward the new Outlander novel, but it won't be out in time, I don't think. There are some cookbooks that have been calling my name now for a while, too, so I'll find something.

I'm getting excited about it now. I'll have to get a new cover for the Nook as it's larger than my old one; my old cover won't fit.

But it's kind of weird now when I read a physical book and actually have to turn pages! I can't just tap the book and have the page turn automatically.
And when I was reading Doctor Sleep last night in bed, I had to have the lights on fairly brightly to be able to read. I'm not really used to that anymore either as the Nook can be as bright or as dim as I need. Isn't it funny how you get used to something so quickly?

That's how it was when my Kindle II died and I was waiting for the Paperwhite to come out. Holding actual books and turning pages seemed like a chore! :lol3: I really love not needing a reading lamp now.

It's here. I spent last night setting it up and getting the e-library's mobile app on it so I can download books. Downloaded 3 books, so I'm OK for now. It's interesting though; on my old Nook Tablet, I downloaded books to the computer, then transferred them over to the Nook. With this one, I added it to our wireless router, so that I can get online and the library books come directly to the Nook....no computer. I don't care for it that much, though, as it's really slow sometimes. I ended up going through the computer, finding books that I wanted, then getting on the Nook and downloading them that way. I kept my computer email address for the library, because I always check that email. I never email through the Nook. That way, I'll know when books are ready to be downloaded from the library.

And while I was adding the Nook to the router, I figured I might as well add our new Droids to the router, too. I had never bothered adding the new phones, but since I was already in there messing around, I got them done, too. I'm not computer-literate by any stretch, so it took a while to figure out where I was going and how to get there. But I got it done (and yes, there was some cussing
). Now I use the work WI-FI for my phone and when I get home, I can use the home WI-FI....it will save on data minutes. Minutes aren't a problem for dear Richard; he has 6 GB. I only have 2, so I need to keep an eye on things sometimes.

As soon as I got it connected, it immediately downloaded everything from the cloud.

I noticed the new Nooks have a 30-pin charging port instead of the really small one that was in the Tablet. They did have a lot of trouble with those older ports.

Oh, and I got the SD card inserted, so there's plenty of space. (I did read that the Nooks have trouble with the SD cards sometimes, but so far, mine's OK.)

Need to hit B & N over lunch today to get a cover for the Nook. I don't like just holding the tablet.....when it's in its cover, it's just like holding a book. And since this one is larger, it's a little more awkward to handle. I did order an anti-glare screen (they are wonderful), but it didn't come yet; should be here tomorrow, I'm thinking.

Rick said to me last night that I should add his Sports Illustrated subscription to the Nook. I looked at him and said, "Where the heck have you been? The Nook has had SI now for well over a year! How do you think I read it?"
He said he didn't know, although I think he did, but forgot. But that was all he needed to know. He had the Nook for the rest of the night!

ETA: And, I just bought Written in my Own Heart's Blood for the grand total of 65 cents! Coming through my Nook on June 10th! I just may take the day off work and spend it flopped on the couch with my Nook! Been waiting for this book for quite a while now.

Thanks, Tricia! I'm going to like it....once I get used to it. I think it was a little harder to set up then the computer!
