Would like opinions on these foods

It seems the more I read, the more confused I get on what to feed my two boys.  They pretty much will only eat pate style foods.  They hate Hounds and Gatos and Friskies Pates.  The brands that I've gotten them to eat fairly consistently are Nature's Variety Instinct, Wellness Core, Nutro Natural Choice, Dave's, Fancy Feast Classics, and Sheba.....all are grain free and I can get them all in pate style.  I seem to know from reading that Nature's Variety and Wellness would be the highest quality and Fancy Feast and Sheba the lowest quality...and that's certainly consistent with the prices of them.

Fancy Feast and Sheba don't have carrageenan but do have meat by-products.

So, which is worse, carrageenan, meat by products or all those fruits and vegetables?    Cost isn't necessarily an issue for me, although I'd certainly rather pay $0.50 than $1.69 for a 3 ounce can of food if the quality is still good.  Right now, I'm feeding them all of these brands which I think is certainly okay....I'm just wondering which ingredient I should try to limit the most.  From the other ingredients, I can't really tell any major difference to explain why Wellness or Nutro would be a higher quality than Fancy Feast or Sheba except for the meat by products.

You can find negative issues with all foods.  The main thing is they are wet foods that kitty will eat and has no issues with.  The Natures Variety is still only 5 % fruits and veggies.  They do make the Instinct in a Limited Ingredient formula that doesn't have as many of the fruits and veggies in it.

You will usually find by-products in the more moderately priced foods.  They don't bother me as much as some people.  The way I look at it they eat what would be considered by-products in prey that they catch and eat.

Wow great post! I've been meaning to ask this too, I have no idea! I still think Nature's Variety Instinct is still the best but why the heck does it have things like tomatoes and cranberries when it's supposedly dangerous since it's not fully researched on its effects on cats. The only fruit and vegetables that I remember that are fully researched for cats are pumpkin and beet pulp. I think cats have no need for things like cranberries and rosemary oil and I heard it could build up in their system too and cause problems. I wish scientists researched more on cats since they are the top pet in the world and there was commercial food available that was made perfectly for cats bodies. I know we have the technology but I feel like vets or someone pay cat food companies a lot of money to put harmful ingredients in pet food so that our kitties and dogs get sick and vets make more money. Idk...

One of the ingredients that you didn't highlight that is really dangerous for cats that is still used in cat food for some inane reason is Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex [Source of Vitamin K Activity]) which is in Fancy Feast and Sheba. Menadione causes anemia and I heard some cats died just because of a small cut because their food had this ingredient and their blood didn't clot properly. Yucca Schidegera is also bad for cats because of its toxicity and it's only added to take away the poop smell! It's like, who cares about how their poop smells as long as they are eating safe foods.

Carrageenan is actually banned in Europe and Canada because it causes tumors so I don't have any idea other than the malicious one of why it's used in American cat food.

Anyways, I would still stick with NVI because it is only 5% veggies so its not as bad plus no carrageenan or guar gum. Or maybe cooking your own cat food to save money? I'm probably going to try to do that soon maybe 50% homemade and 50% commercial... I love my cat so much, I can't risk anything for her.

I wish I could stick with Natures Variety, but even though they'll eat it, they don't really love it. In fact, they don't love/like any of them for more than a day or two at a time...I'm in continuous juggling of brands and flavors to keep them eating enough. At least your comments are leading me toward trying to feed more Natures Variety and less of the ones with carrageenan. I'm not sure I'm ready to try the raw/homemade route...I doubt my boys would be impressed with the effort! They won't even consider eating a sardine! I ended up feeding the can to the dog...She loved it...go figure. As someone said..we do our best and hope it's enough. I'll also continue to convince them that shredded is really an acceptable form of food..that would add more choices.

Hmm, I read in a comment somewhere that Nature's Variety Instinct's dog canned formula is the same as the cat canned formula. After checking it out on the website, sure enough the ingredients are the same and in the same order. I don't know if that is soo great because dogs and cats most likely have different needs. However, I think it's still one of the best choices and it would be economical to probably buy their 13 oz cans instead of the small 3 oz ones. One thing that alarmed me a bit about instinct is that the taurine seems kind of low at only 0.05%. So I guess its one of the best of the worst.

How about Tiki Cat and Weruva? I heard good things about those but we didn't use them yet. But they are definitely options.

Maybe if your cats only like pate style you can put the chunky cat food into a food processor or something. My cat is the same way, she definitely prefers pate style food but she surprisingly liked a chunky grilled chicken food from Blue Buffalo straight from the can. Obviously I'm trying to get her off anything with harmful ingredients so BB is being weaned off her but I just wanted to say that don't give up with trying different varieties of food. Also when my cat Paprika got really sick and was throwing up I boiled some chicken and cut it in pieces. Paprika loved that simple homecooked meal so I'm thinking maybe I will try the homemade thing because it definitely saved a lot of money and she gobbled it up. But it's definitely a bit nerve wracking to cook for your cat because you never know if your doing it right that's why I'm going to try the 50/50 thing at first.  Also, I don't think I can do the raw thing either, it just seems too crazy to me and has so many more risks.

Tiki cat (chicken ones) and Weruva are the two I'm trying soooo hard to get them to eat. They are wonderful (in my opinion--not Sammy and BamBam' s opinion!)
The chicken looks and smells just like you cooked it yourself and, yes, all the right ingredients and none of the bad ones. I highly recommend you try both of those for Paprika. I do chop them up..I haven't yet gone with full food processor publicizing but may try that. I can eventually get them to eat a can, but only when I mix in some other kind with it.....but I'm going to continue the battle....after all, it took me a long time to really love broccoli.
