I was needing advice about my 2 1/2 yo male Persian Oscar . He has been thru so much these last few weeks but has been such a fighter . It started 3 weeks ago he got sick was throwing up then just stop eating and then stop drinking so after a few days we took him to vet , he thought he had a blockage so gave him enima trying to get him to pass it then sent him home with medicine to give him and another enima he was getting worse after 2 days we took him back they did surgery to remove blockage on the 15th but when they open him they seen it was no hairball but instead his intestine had over lapped itself so the removed about a 7 inch piece of his intestine , he had a long 10 day stay in hospital trying to get him rehydrated and to eat and give meds he had to do a jugeler catheter to give him I've fluids for 5 days his condition was ups and downs we went to visit him twice a day on this Friday dr noticed he is jaundice and he is still very dehydrated , so he had hus bring him home to be with us and be comfortable and feed and water him with syringe. Today he doesn't seem any better he is so weak he can hardly hold himself up with hind legs this has been such a heartbreaking experience we love him so much and want to do what's best . I really wish he was stronger by now but sadly he is not . We are torn about what to do . Dr said if he put him to sleep he would have to try to go straight to his heart because his veins are too small. I guess I was just wanting some advice from someone that has been thru this . Thank you for listening. I've never had to do anything like this

Someone who can respond to your questions should be online soon. Have you considered a 2nd opinion for post-op care? Sending vibes.

Ask your initial vet for copies of all work - lab reports etc. to take to 2nd vet.

Your cat needs to see a vet now.

Check for an emergency vet in your area.

There are 2 in Little Rock.

After Hour Animal Hospital   at                            (501)955-0911  or

Animal Emergency & Speciality Clinic at(501)224-3784.

Also check out-of-state Memphis, Shreveport ... whatever the biggest city close to you is.

Dehydration is very serious. Please contact an emergency vet.

I am unable to take him to emergency vet I am a hard situation I just spent months salary at his vet that said he done all he could ,, I'm am trying to get him hydrated , he already had jaundice when dr sent him home . I think he sent him home because he knew he was already in liver failure and didn't think he would make it thru the night but it's 3 days later and he's still here and I'm trying so hard to help him .

I'm so very sorry you are going through this @OscarsMom41 and that your cat is so ill.  If he is jaundiced, he needs immediate (or as soon as possible) medical attention, and its possible you may have to let him go.  I wish I had answers for you, but this is between you and your vet, and is also connected to his prognosis and quality of life.

If you would like to talk to a trained professional, and a very caring woman who does this for a living, you can call the ASPCA grief Helpline for free.  They tale a lot of calls from people in a posistion similar to your, not knowing what to do.

If he cannot be saved, or if his quality of life cannot be improved, then its possible that the only humane thing to do is let him go with your vet's help, peacefully.

Thank you Stephenq , this is such a painful thing to have to do these last 3 weeks have been so very hard I love this sweet lil guy so much , I have never been so attached to a cat as I am him but I know I will probably have to let him go tomorrow . Because he is so small the vet had a hard time with his veins trying to put in Iv. After his surgery ,So he said if he had to put him to sleep he would have to do a heartstick euthanasia ....is this method going to be peacefull .

I'm honestly not sure, I would ask your vet and if they say it might cause some initial discomfort perhaps they can give some anesthesia gas first.
I'm so sorry for what you're going through. Please stay in touch.

I am so sorry. Please Please Please if you are going to put him to sleep find a vet that will do house calls. Or call around and find another vet that will not have to do a "heart stick". I honestly cannot believe the vet used that term with you. In most states and according to the AAHA it is not supposed to ever be used anymore. I cannot stress this enough. Please find someone else. You will never get over the sight of it. I don't care how debilitated and how "bad" the veins are, there are much better options available.

I am so sorry you have to make this choice. It souds like your poor kitty is very sick.

I agree with StephenQ, the vet can give him a gas anaesthetic first.
I'm so sorry your going through this! My heart aches for you!!!!

I am sad to say that my sweet boy Oscar is no longer with me :(
He went thru a very risky surgery was just never able to get hydrated after , his
Vet and assistant were so kind with him they try so hard to save him , they told us
Many other people would have given up much sooner not wanting the expense
Of treatment but we so bad wanted to save him , he ended up having liver and kidney
Failure. His vet was able to find a vein in his leg , he went very peacefully .
He is now laid to rest under a tree with freshly planted flowers just for him ,
Right outside our bedroom were he can continue to sleep above our
Heads were he so loved to be .thank you all

I am so sorry for your loss.  You did everything you could for him.  It's never easy to let go; I know.
Play happy over the bridge Oscar!
