Depo Medrol

I have been reading the posts from everyone and it seems there has been other cat parents who have experienced my nightmare. I took my cat in a week ago for antibiotics due to upper respiratory disease secondary to herpes. He is 10 years old and was eating, drinking and walking. The vet gave him depo medrol and he took a turn for the worse. He was in the hospital for 5 days and is now home. He has developed kidney failure, liver failure and diabetes. And they r claiming these were underlying issues. However no symptoms till the shot and I am devastated! We now are force feeding, and he is on 2 antibiotics, liver supplement, appetite stimulant, and insulin. Does anyone have a positive outcome to share and if so how long did this last? I feel they are to blame but they will never take responsibility. I just need.a little hope that we are doing all we can and he will pull through.

I am so sorry.  The main issue I have with the shots of long acting medications is that if there is an adverse reaction there is nothing that can be done but wait it out with supportive care.  With daily oral medication you can simply stop giving it and the reaction clears up very quickly.

Those shots have their place mainly with feral kitties that can't be medicated daily.

In addition to the reaction I would question giving a steroid to a kitty with the herpes virus.  Steroids work by ratcheting down the immune response which is not something you would want to do with a kitty that has herpes.  I know we very recently had someone here with a herpes kitty that has developed IBD.  Because of the herpes the kitty couldn't be given a steroid, the last I heard she was taking the kitty to a holistic vet.

That stuff is going to take a long time to work out of his system, hopefully he will make a full recovery.  I don't think anything can be done other than supportive care.
