We found a kitten in our garage we waited to see but momma never came back so we bought him a bottle and kitten formula (im making it home made for him now) he will eat alot in one sitting and at hungry for more. Im afraid im going to over feed him. He also twitches violently in his sleep. Help please!

It is almost impossible to over feed a kitten.  They in general should be given all they can and will eat.

Twitching is also normal.

Do you have any idea how old he is? If not can you tell us if his eyes are open? If he walks around? If he does walk, is he wobbly or is he sure footed? Can he run? Does he play/pounce? It is important that we be able to at least approximate his age because without having any idea of this it is hard to advise you.  For example, if under 3 weeks, the most important thing is he HAS to be kept warm as he can't regulate his own body heat.  If over 4 weeks, you should be introducing him to solid foods. Etc.

How did you wait for mom and for how long?

This article has some good tips:http://www.thecatsite.com/a/hand-rearing-kittens

We waited 24 hours for mom to return. The vet said he is two weeks old and was 7 oz when I took him 3 days ago. He also just peed on me in his sleep is this also normal? We have a heating pad in half his bed so he can move off it when warm enough

Sorry I see in the post title you said he was 2 weeks old... my bad
How do you know mom did not return for the whole 24 hours? Feral cats are very good at hiding whenever a human might be watching.  Did the kitten seem warm, and well groomed? He definitely weighs the right amount for 2 weeks old so I really do think mom had to have been feeding him. I am only asking all these questions because at 2 weeks he really should still be with mom if possible.

Are you stimulating him to pee? if so how long after that did he pee on you? Obviously kittens at this age don't have control of their bladders really.

In general you should make sure he stays on the heating pad.  Again, he can't regulate his body temperature at all. It would take very little time off the pad for him to get too cold.

How often are you feeding him? Are you weighing him daily? How long have you had him? I know you said you took him to the vet 3 days ago but did you have him before that?

We continued to check the garage for mom and never seen her return we also left all doors open so if she was going to return she could. Also called and asked the vet if we should take him or leave him and she said since the tempature was dropping and mom still didnt return to go ahead and bring him in.

Yes we are stimulating him to pee and it was about 30 minutes after that he peed on me.

Feeding him every 2-3 hours depending on his demand (he will screammm when hungry lol) I am not weighing him daily should I start? We've only had him 4 days today I took him to the vet shortly after taking him from the garage

Aw what a cutie!

Yes, definitely weigh him daily.  He should be gaining around 10 grams a day (.3 to .4 ounces). If he is gaining less than that consistently or if his weight goes down, you definitely should know that as it is a warning sign of serious danger.

Sometimes the reaction to stimulation can be delayed.  This sounds normal too.

Every 2-3 hours is perfect in terms of feeding him.

Let us know if you have more questions! He seems to be in good hands

He seems to be gaining with his fat little belly he has! I'm going to get a scale today to start weighing him.

Even if he peed during stimulatiom its okay that he did again without? Im sorry im just so paranoid as this is our first bottle fed baby.

Thank you so much for all your help everyone else on google scared me into thinking he was dying (told you im paranoid!!) Youve really calmed my nerves and as you can tell scamp is living the vip life now

Oh what a darling little punkin!

If you are certain that mom was not coming back and that you did not see her around because she was hiding from you, then the most likely thing that happened was, she was moving her litter and left one behind.

This is quite common, not done purposely, but the stress from relocating her kids will often cause this.

Always feed on his tummy with his head slightly tipped up, be sure the nipple doesn't allow the milk to come out too fast, that he is warmed always on a low setting heating pad with a towel covering it, and he gets pottyed after every feeding.  After 3 weeks old he will be able to maintain his body temp with a small blanket to snuggle with.

Another week to 10 days from now and you can put out a small, low sided box for him to use, some begin as young as 3 1/2 weeks old.

It's an excellent idea to weigh him daily, so you will know he is gaining every day, 10 grams is great, close to that is okay too.

I definitely do not not see him dying. He is eating a lot and looks appropriate and healthy for his age.  While usually cats pee/poop during or immediately after stimulation, the reaction can definitely be delayed (I have a rescue friend whose couch got ruined that way when she didn't realize they might not poop immediately, no joke). 30 min is a bit on the longer side for that for sure but if it was only once and it was just pee I don't see it as any kind of concern.

Also, don't hesitate to phone your vet instead of going to the internet where webmd thinks everyone is dying.  You are a paying customer and s/he just saw the kitten, They should be willing to answer some basic questions on the phone for free and just tell you if they think you need to come in.

of course, I think this site is great too
but we can't replace real vets.

Hey yall! Do you remember scamper who was found in my garage? Well hes thriving! He runs(sprints) jumps plays follows you everywhere and gives kisses! Hes doing amazing. Were starting to interduce to littler and hell get in all by himself and dig around in it! I do have some questions tho. Whats the best way to whean him? Ive tried really wet food with his formula he didnt want it. Also how do we break him of biting? As you can imagine he has very sharp teeth lol.

orphans tends to be slower with weaning, they have no ma (nor littermates here either)  to take example from...

When he bites, you must mark it, by giving from you high pitched noise - like a bitten kitten would do...

That is this way they learn from each other.

Good luck!

good on you for taking this little baby under your wing. my boyfriend found a one and a half week old kitten with pneumonia but the good thing is she loved her food so she thrived. she would go mad for her bottle, i have scars from the grip she had on me. have you tried putting a teaspoon on a plate and warming it up a few seconds? it makes it smellier. the stronger it smells the more they'll be attracted to it. my baby is now a year old, smaller than most cats but so gorgeous. she's currently on my lap right now :)

Yes, put canned pate kitten food or pate adult but stick to chicken and turkey flavors and try to stay clear of the fish ones.

Put a bit on a saucer and mash a bit of formula into it, warm a bit and show him BEFORE feeding time, otherwise he will whine and resist, as he would rather be babied with a bottle as long as he can :)

Do this each time he is going to be fed, he will soon get the hang of it.

One big question though, this adorable pic of him on the grass outside, this panicks me. Are you aware of how dangerous that is? He is unprotected from the zillion viruses all over outside, adult cats are immune to them but unvaccinated kittens are a very high risk.

Not a good idea. Just an fyi.
