Hi, I'm new here! I have 2 cats, one a spayed female tabby & one grey male bigfoot. He is named Kitty & has 5 toes on the front & 6 on the back. All of which are operational. His back foot is quite wide & seems like it has an extra bone running down it to go with the extra toes. Has anyone else seen such a thing? I've read that extra toes on the back are rare but I can't find any info about extra bones above the toes in the long part of the foot.

~~Time to go spend some quality time with the kitty's!!~~

WELCOME to The Cat Site!  You will find lots of information here.

I have a big foot kitty too -- in fact that's his name, BIGFOOT.  He has 7 toes in front and 5 in back.  In case you don't know, the term for extra toes is POLYDACTYL (poly=many, dactyle=digits).

Here is a good link on polydactyl cats you may enjoy, just click on it, to see pictures etc.

Hey there!

I have a polydactyl kitty as well!  She's got five (and a half?) toes on her front legs so it looks like she's got thumbs.  My sister wants to train her to give high fives :)   I just wanted to offer a little bit of advice.  Mine has five toes on the front but she has six claws!  When you trim his nails keep an eye out for extra claws.  After talking to a vet tech friend, she said it was relatively common for polydactyl cats to have claws growing into their foot since they frequently have some hidden ones that they don't necessarily tend to themselves.

I'd love to see pictures!

Skyefoxx, thanks for the heads up on the claw issue. Luckily my kitty has no 'dewclaw' type toes so hidden claws are not going to cause him grief. All his toes are the same & all have everything to make them usable.  I regularly trim his claws because they are needle sharp & he gets stuck on furniture at times.
