Unfortunately our entire inside colony of 11 cats was exposed to the calici virus due to a feral cat outside who had it and whom I didn't know had it.  I was feeding him outside and brought his plate to the sink and that is surely how it was brought inside.  I learned my lesson, but for 11 years I fed cats outside without this happening.

One of our cats is 10 years 10 months and has had a rebound of the calici virus.  He takes Orbax for his mouth ulcers and inflamed gums.  I am very sad for him.  I read about the use of Borax on the tongue to help the ulcers but wonder if it helps the gums as well.

I don't know what kind of borax they are talking about, also.

He has asthma (very mild with infrequent coughing) so I don't want to aggravate it.  He is not needing medication for the asthma.

Are other things done to relieve the painful gum inflammation or ulcers?  Yes, he is eating.  We feed a careful diet of raw food which I got from being on the IBD Raw feeding of cats Facebook group which has helped me tremendously.

I am practicing isolation as best I can and no shared plates, etc.

I use Lactoferrin, L Lysine and Nexabiotic in his food (s boulardi).  I have got that covered <s>.

Thanks.

I don't know what your vet would recommend but my vet gave my cat a shot of long-acting dexamethasone (steroid) when his mouth was so inflamed he could not eat and that did the trick.  The Orbax will cover any bacterial infection.

When my Boo had a calicivirus flare, he had a very painful ulcer on this tongue and would not eat. The vet gave him sub-q fluids, an "anti-inflammatory" although I do not remember what it was, and a Fentanyl patch for pain. You could discuss pain management with your vet until the flare eases up.
