Our cat has had ibd for a couple years now.  We have had great success in battling it and she is good now - running and playing and we haven't seen her look like she is in pain for quite a while.  She still gets finicky with food sometimes and we have to switch her.  She is still on Pred.

In the non-winter months we let her go outside (in a pen of sorts while we monitor her) and have always given her frontline plus.  We're wondering if we should do that this season or not.  She is still on Prednisone and has been for a couple years so we're not sure if frontline plus would put her into an acute position with the ibd or if the fleas, tics and mosquitoes are a bigger risk.

Anyone out there with an ibd cat have any experience with frontline plus?

I don't know that the Frontline would cause issues but it's so individual to the kitty.  I have an IBD kitty and what works for him may not work for another.  I have seen a lot lately about Frontline not working well anymore.  People seem to be having better luck with Advantage now.

Frontline, Advantage and Activyl (new to me) work by staying in the hair/hair oils. They do not get into the bloodstream. Revolution, however, does get into the bloodstream.

I agree with Denice, that each cat is a different case. I use Advantage for my cats (many who have a chronic health problem or two) for the very reason that it does NOT get into their systems.

Just curious, since Advantage, Activyl and Frontline remain on the cat's hair and oils, when they groom themselves, do they ingest these chemicals and is the product then less effective because it has been licked off?

Once the product is *dry*, it is not ingested. So, no worries there. You can also bath a cat 48 hrs after the product is placed on them without washing it off.

As for the effectiveness, it will naturally lessen over time (but this is true of all products.)

Just an FYI .. Flea treatments such as Advantage should always be administered by parting the hair and placing the liquid on the 'back' of the neck (not front) where a cat can't lick this area.
