Hi, my cats are eating Friskies canned food at the moment, which I know is not so great because of the grain and high ash content, so I was wondering what is the best to transition to out of these options. Can you also tell me what kind/flavor is the best? Gandalf can't eat fish flavor because he has a sensitive stomach, so I can't get it for Boogie either because I feed them together.

I am looking for something with not a lot of grain, with meats as the first three ingredients. Thanks!

Fancy Feast

Wellness

Blue Wilderness

Innova

Natural Balance

You know the old saying "Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder"?  Well, almost the same can be said for "the best" canned cat food
Pretty much everyone has their own favorite.  Some will tell you make sure it's grain free, others will tell you make sure it's low in carbs, some will tell you make sure chicken is the first ingredient, others will tell you to go with rabbit...you get the idea

So, really,it's all based on you, how much your budget it, how finicky your cats are, whether or not carrageenen or guar gum are an issue for you, etc.

Maybe this article will help?  http://www.thecatsite.com/a/what-makes-the-best-canned-cat-food

Or this one?  http://www.thecatsite.com/a/how-to-compare-cat-foods-calculate-carbs-dry-matter-basis

And, actually, Friskies PATES are not too bad, all in all, if you ask most people.  They are certainly better than dry foods, and are low on the carb. scale than a lot of much higher priced foods.  But only the PATES.   Same with Fancy Feast CLASSICS.  Those are affordable, low carb foods. (low carb is important to ME
)

For the price, I think, if you can find the 13 oz cans of Hounds and Gatos, that's the ticket.   Just my opinion.

@mrsgreenjeens  thanks for the reply! Carrageenan or guar gum are not big problems for me. I am looking for low-carb and grain foods, and the price isn't too much of an issue.

I think I've limited the possibilities for Wellness Grain-Free, Fancy Feast Classics, and Friskies Pates. I guess I'll try all 3 and see what my boys prefer

If you have a Trader Joe's near you their chicken and turkey canned cat food is good.  Both my girls enjoy it, its .69 a can and was listed in The Cat Bible as one of the "grocery chain" cat foods that is ok for your pets.  I also give my girls Wellness, Innova, Merrick and other "good" natural type food.  Look on the can for "wheat free".  Cats are carnivors and need meet to be in optimum health.  Kibble dehydrates them and leads to obesity, basically has no nutritional value.  It does not clean a cats teeth, that statement (in my opinion) is the same as saying if we eat a cracker the roughness of chewing the cracker will clean our teeth.

It is hard to not go nuts about the what is in the food we feed our pals, we can only do the best we can and make a healthy choice (that is affordable) for them.  Everytime you find another article about one food and you change to it there are 12 other articles saying the first one is poision.   Unless you actually do the "raw food" route it is the only way you know exactly what you are feeding your cats and that is a huge commitment.  There are plenty people out there that do that and I applaude them.

Wellness is a fine choice for your cats, I wouldn't feed any fish because that isn't good for them and their poop will really smell powerul.  Good luck,

@Luv2Cats  I know about how dry food is not as good. Thanks for your suggestions though. I actually have added Trader Joes cat food to my food rotation.

I'm not adding wellness because it has carrageenan and that can cause multiple types of cancers.
