Where I went wrong was using LensCrafters for my glasses when I first started wearing them. They measure PD of course, but they also center your eyes in the lenses using OC. I don't remember what the acronym stands for, but it's the vertical measurement of your pupil in the lens. PD is the horizontal measurement.

It's been my experience that no one, even other companies under the LensCrafters umbrella, use this.

My eyes are used to this type of lens so it's a big hassle buying glasses. Like I said before, the last 2 times I bought glasses they each had to be remade 3 or 4 times. Anyone else had this issue?
I don't know about PD and OC, but where I go they measure all sorts of ways and I do know they measure from bottom of frame up to some point on the eye.  Would that be OC?

I got my money back yesterday. After visiting various opticians I found that some said you have to tilt your head back to see the computer and some said it shouldn't be necessary. The most reasonable sounding person dotted my glasses and said that although I would have to tilt my head back, the glasses could be made so that the intermediate zone was much larger simply by setting the glasses lower on my nose, remeasuring, and having the glasses redone. That made sense since the glasses were constantly sliding down my nose and the frames were covering up my eyebrows. I reasoned that the part of the lenses that were covering my eyebrows were really not doing anything--after a certain point, I can't move my eyes that far up to see anyway! So that person was probably right.

No matter what, though, my eyelashes shouldn't be touching the lenses. If I set the glasses were they should be on my nose, I can't read at all and everything in the intermediate and near zones is blurry. So my conclusion was to get the refund and go somewhere else where they pay more attention to the fitting. They offered to remake the glasses as computer glasses, but if they made a mistake in the fitting the first time and refused to do anything about it or even admit that something was wrong in the fitting, why would anything change if I had the lenses redone?

I'm pretty sure it is. To be honest, I don't understand what's so hard about my glasses? They are single vision lenses. I have astigmatism in both eyes, and both eyes are the exact same prescription. I am blind as a bat, so maybe the strength of the prescription is the issue.

raintyger raintyger I'm glad you took them back. I did the same thing one time at Doctors Value Vision. I was getting 2 pairs of glasses and they tried 4 times before I gave up. A big waste of time.

That's pretty much the deal with progressives, you have to tilt your head back and look down at the computer.
I currently have progressive lenses, and I don't have to tilt my head back or down to see the computer. I just look straight ahead.   Sounds to me like your progressives weren't well fitted to you, which is why I sent mine back for them to fix.  When I look through the middle of my lens, I should see middle distance, which is my computer distance.  For farther distance, I move my eyes upwards a bit, or downward a bit to see closer up.  I have 6 different fields of vision, and all it takes is a slight movement of my eyes up or down to see each one.

Maybe next time you should ask why they have to keep redoing the lenses. Just tell them it's happened more than once and you'd like to know the reason so that in the future the lenses don't have to get redone so many times. It helps them save $,  too, so they should want to tell you!

How many times will an optical store redo the lenses without asking for more $? I was under the impression most places will give it 2 tries.

It's an old prescription and my eyesight has changed.  I just chose to get computer glasses rather than have these changed because the distance part is fine.  When they were new, it was more like that, just a  slight natural movement.  The only issue I have is computer distance, which I think is a little closer than middle distance. Since I'm at the computer all day at work, and a good portion of the evening too, computer glasses just made more sense.

80% of problems with progressives are supposed to be due to error in fitting. But I'll bet 100% of the opticians who are dealing with a customer having problems will claim that it's the customer's fault for not understanding how progressives work or not adapting, and the product was fit correctly!

I know both DVV and EyeMaster's will keep trying until they get it right. At least that was my experience. DVV was trying to convince me to let them try a 5th time before I gave up.

I learned of the OC measurement being the issue at EyeMaster's. I haven't bought a pair since then.

The pair I'm wearing now are duct taped where the frame folds on the left side. I don't have vision insurance so I'm making do.

I'm sure knowing to tell the optician about the OC issue will make it easier next time. Regardless, I can't buy online.

I get my glasses from a site called costalcontact.com they have something that lets you upload a picture of yourself so you can 'try on' some of the glasses before you buy them.

They do have progressive lenses, and if theu don't work for you, you can send them back. Customer service is really good. The site also will not let you pick a lense that would not fit in the frams you got.

Oh! And for every one you buy, they donate one to someone in need, which I thought was really cool ^.^

I've heard of Coastal, it was mentioned as an online place where you can get your first pair free (single vision, I'm sure). I just might do that for the distance vision glasses that I want for night driving. Thanks for the vote of confidence!

No problem :) -- I think the deal is either your frams are free, or the lenses themselves are free. I can't remember exactly which. I -do- however remember paying only 125 or so for my first pair including shipping, which I thought was fabulous.

I've been tempted to order glasses online and I might next year. I've gotten glasses from all price ranges, I think everyone here knows vet and pet bills can leave you strapped for cash sometimes. However I have to add that I have two Lencrafters glasses and they are the best of the best. I often fall asleep wearing them, they are THAT comfortable and helpful. I am hoping for another pair sometime but it may be awhile because the price for progressives is INSANE :( but worth it if you can swing it.

I thought I'd update this since I did take a chance and order some glasses online. I ordered two, one single-vision reading and the other I took a chance on and ordered progressive. I figured if the progressive didn't work out I could always just use the top part for driving at night glasses, which I don't do that often anyway.

For both you did have to visualize yourself a little to pick glasses which would look good on you. I went to several brick and mortar places that had a bunch of sample frames out and tried them on. After a while you can figure out what shape and colors look best on you. I found that the measurements printed on the frame were somewhat useful, but it's kinda like clothing sizes - varies from brand to brand and model to model.

The reading glasses work just fine. They look OK on me, could've done better--I'm giving it a "B" in the "flatters me" category.

The real laugh was in the progressives. After my horrible first experience I was a bit apprehensive. But the prescription was just fine, straight out of the box! They are a plastic frame with nosepads, which is kinda unique. The frame was very inexpensive, $16, and the quality is on the cheap side. There is no wire running through the temple pieces, so if I leave it in the car on a hot day, they could very well warp. But since I'm planning on using these for driving at night or going to the movies (some movie with rich special effects), I don't think that'll be a problem. I paid $57, so I'm happy.

Reading glasses I would order again. The progressives I would order again only if my requirements remain light--right now I really don't need trifocal progressives. But if I get to the point where I need vision correction all the time, then I'd probably invest in a pair with a traditional optician.

I agree 100% on the LensCrafters glasses. I have made the mistake of buying at Dr's Value Vision and Eye Masters the last couple of times and those glasses didn't even last 2 years.

The funny thing is, I'm pretty sure they are all owned by the same company. I am currently wearing the pair of LensCrafters glasses I bought back in 2001. All my other newer glasses have been smashed to bits and these just keep going.

I went into a high-end glasses store last week and asked for rough quotes. Single lens that darken, and frames in which I can't see the frame or the line where the frame should be, and no solid or frilly sides. Was quoted $900 Cdn for glasses, and $700 for prescription Ray Bans. I just wanted an idea of the cost. I'm obviously not going back. But I do want a pair of glasses that don't fall apart. I'm tired of trying to puts lens back in (half frames) and tightening the screws (sun glasses).

I'll never buy another half frame. The last ones I bought didn't fall out too terribly often, but the lenses developed cracks around the base where it meets the frame. I don't know if the type where the arms, and nose piece screw into the lenses are any more durable. I think maybe the flexible titanium type will be my next purchase. I will need a pair of sunglasses too, so hopefully a bogo will be available.

I have had the lenses that darken before and imo, they just don't get dark enough.

I had a friend who worked in a high end glasses store. He said the designer frames from Versace, Dolce & Gabana, etc are made by the same company that makes the cheap frames. You're basically just paying for the name. Ray Bans in the other hand are fantastic sunglasses. I'm not sure if they make their own prescription line or not though.

My mom wears Progressives. She has had the worst trouble with getting her glasses from the local eye doctor---she had to take one pair back 5 or 6 times, and even then she was just tolerating them, they weren't perfect. Plus they cost more than $600, and her last pair scratched badly within a month. This time she went to Costco (they just opened in Sioux Falls last year), and she's very satisfied. They worked for her right away and they said their lenses have the antiglare in the plastic instead of a coating so it shouldn't scratch. Time will tell! And the best part is she bought 2 pairs for less than 1 pair costs from the local place.

I haven't gotten new glasses in way too long. I really need to do it soon. I'll definitely get them from Costco! :D

Is their eyeglasses dept like their pharmacy... open to the public? I'm not a member.
