Hello everyone!

One week ago i was with my family in south dakota when we went to our neighbor's house. They have a barn there filled with wild cats. In the barn there was a box full of about 20 kittens of various ages. But, they were all in poor health and some were even dead :( . My uncle convinced my mom to let me take one, and we took another one so that they wouldn't be lonely, and would have a better chance of surviving if they were together. The truth was, the kittens were going to die if they stayed in the barn.

So we went back home and have been caring for the kittens, but they have been having diarrhea and are pretty messy. But i love them sooo much already and they are so adorable. However, my mom keeps saying things like "Well, we will have to find them a home together." and "Well they won't be here when that happens" because she wants to give them away. I know that we already have 2 cats who are 12 and 15, but i would be devastated if we gave them away. i'm already crying while i'm typing this, and im so scared of how i'll feel when there gone. I don't want them to be someone else's cats, and i know thats selfish of me, but i can't help it. I don't know what to do. My dad is a vet, so they would have a good home here. My mom says she might change her mind, but she is probably just saying that to make me feel better.

I know that having 4 cats is hard, but i would care for the kittens and i could take them to college with me even though i'm only 14 so thats a long ways away. Please if you have any advice i'm willing to hear anything. I'm so sad and confused because my mom can be scary to try to talk to.

Thanks

Just to proceed to talk with your ma.   What is the dad saying??  If he is pro the kittens, you can perhaps make him help you?

OK, I understand you manage the kittens OK, as you dont ask about how to handle them.  But please tell about them anyway.  How old are they?

They have diarrhea, right?  What have you done about that so far?

(not to mentioneing, small kittens do have rare poo, alike toothpaste, or somewhat rarer, so THIS is no diarrhea).

The situation at yours neigbours sounds terrible.   Really an Animal Police case...

The solution for them in long run is of course, to spay and neuter as many of their cats they can.   There are surely some rescue group or cooperative shelter nearby who can help them / you with advices how to do it most smoothly and cheapest.

I can send you some links to find cheap vets and spaying clinics too.

Good luck!

I am sorry for your situation. But one thing I don't understand. If your dad is a vet, has he not treated the kittens for diarrhea? It could be something simple like worms, which all kittens have. Is that the only reason your mom wants to get rid of them, because they are making messes?

When you say you would care for the kittens, does that mean your mom has all the work and responsibility now? Are you willing to feed all the cats, clean up after them (including any litterboxes), help with dusting, vacuuming, etc.? I can't say that it would change your mother's mind if you took on some of the work involved in keeping pets, but it might help.
