Sylvester was just diagnosed with IBS yesterday, and I'm transferring him from Fancy Feast to Science Diet Z/D, per reccomendation of my vet. And completely taking away dry.

What I'm wondering is, is there a canned food that's trustworhty that it is the ingredient that it says on the can, that also comes in 3 oz. cans?

I know most pet food manufacturers dont clean the vats between batches, so I'm looking for a company that is known they do that.

Thanks

ibdkitties.net for tips on types of food.

I've had success with is Nature's Variety Instinct and hopefully many other posters will chime in with food they've had success with.. I have no idea as to whether or not they clean their vats between runs.

I haven't fed it to our cats: assuming they haven't changed the recipe since Dr. Pierson compiled her food chart, it's pretty high in carbohydrate. Our cats have sensitive stomachs (I guess that's typical of Siamese mixes, which is what they are...) so I have to keep carbs low, animal protein high, and avoid ingredients like pea protein, potato starch, and carrageenan. My choices for them are fairly limited but their guts seem happy since I cut those things out of their diet.

I do feed them Nature's Variety Instinct canned duck food sometimes, and they like it; they also like the NVI turkey and chicken. Those are pricy foods so I'm very glad they wouldn't want to eat them every day!

I was just wondering if I should feed him small meals several times a day, or is two big meals a day ok?

Three meals, minimum, is best. Those of us that work and feed three meals usually feed before work, after work, and before bed - the meals aren't evenly spaced. But the more frequent smaller meals you can manage, the easier it is on his system.

For the canned, you can open whatever cans and size cans you want, and freeze the rest in meal sized portions in baggies, small glass jars, tupperware type stuff OR in ice cube trays. If using ice cube trays, pop them out when frozen and drop into a bag. This keeps the food fresh as opposed to leftovers in the fridge. Just put in a baggie in lukewarm water 10 minutes or so before you want to serve the meal. :)

Unfortunately higher end foods choices here are very slim

You can order food online. Many places will require buying an entire case, but for try out purposes you can use the links in my signature for stores that will sell single cans.

I know that feeling of limited choice all too well! Just ask if you're wondering about other brands you can buy locally. I tried a lot of grain-free cat foods -- and learned quite a bit about IBD and cat diet -- last fall when our previous cat was very sick and not hungry... and now I've learned lots more with our new cats and their odd sensitivities and preferences.

My vets main concern was finding a food that the company cleans the vats in between batches to be sure Sylvester is only getting the food that it says on the label. She said that's why she wants him on the SD D/D, cuz she knows they do that

My kitty has IBD and recently developed a chicken allergy, it's really trial and error with food.  I have found that the simplest foods, foods that are as close to just meat, liver and the supplements that you can get work the best.

You will find that many vets push the Hills foods.  Hills starts early in the vet schools and continues their marketing to practicing vets.
