I just noticed this. It wasn't there earlier today. I am wondering what it is, if it's an emergency, or not. It doesn't seem to bother him, and when I gently touched that area, I didn't get a reaction. He's not scratching his ears excessively either, if at all. He is recovering from a few days of sneezing bouts that we suspect are from pollens outside.

indoor or outdoor cat? No scratching of ears at all that you have seen? any fleas? Have you checked with a flea comb? Anything else out of the ordinary?

Indoor. Rarely scratches his ear, and always scratches the outside area, and never for more than a few seconds. No fleas (just had him at the vet last week).

He was sneezing quite a bit last few days, but seems to have recovered yesterday.

Is he your only cat? Does it look the same on both ears?

There are a few different things to consider.

Is this self inflicted or not?

Is there any sign of him self traumatizing like fur in his nails?

Fur his color stuck in another cats nails?

If he is doing it to himself you will probably find other marks on the outside of the ear as well or other scratches around the ear.

Will post this now but not done with my massive questions

If he is scratching himself has there been a recent diet change?

Any recent medications?

Any baths or flea treatments?

Are they blotches or scratches? they look like scratches to me from the picture.

If it is self trauma, it could be a reaction to something, Allergy, food allergy, contact allergy, ear mites, ring worm.

That is a broad list. I doubt it is ringworm but you never know.

Contact allergy would have to be something that his ears came into contact with so that also to me is doubtful

ear mites I doubt because he is inside and it doesn't look like it

Could also be scabies but also doubt it due to his being indoor and scabies is very itchy. So is ringworm and ear mites.

Being as he is eating and drinking and acting just fine, I would think it could wait to see the vet till morning or even a day or so provided it doesn't get any worse.

I am not a vet and this is only my opinion based on the picture
