Very cute.

She is very lucky to have such a nice (not plastic) piano to play on.

I was raised with an old upright in the house, can't remember the brand now, though.

While I was allowed to tinker on it, I didn't actually begin lessons until I was 9.

I will say that my downfall was memorizing the keys in a piece, which took my eyes away from the sheet.  I kinda wish my instructors had emphasized the "read and play", as opposed to allowing me to memorize and play.  My best instructor was one who actually began to explain the mathematical pattern to the keyboard (circle of 5ths).  I think if I had been able to stay with her longer, I might have been a better reader & player.

Unfortunately, the old upright is long gone, and we now have no musical instruments to speak of in the home.

I do miss it.

Very nice....she did a good job!

I started piano lessons when I was 4 years old. And hated every minute of them. I took those darn lessons for 14 years before I had the courage to stand up to my parents. We have a piano, actually my old piano, but it's way out of tune. I've always wanted to start taking lessons again.

I'm the same way. I didn't get into piano lessons until I was 12 because my parents couldn't really afford it (and man are they expensive!), and I was half-hearted with it. 12 years later, I wish I wasn't! I can't sight-read to save my life, I have no theory under my belt and my teacher gave up on teaching it to me in less than a year even though I loved it and did the homework religiously, and the way I learn is such an inconvenient combination of needing to hear the song I'm learning, then seeing it played, and having the sheets... That circle of fifths kind of blows my mind. I need to read more on that.

Isn't it funny how that works out? Your parents do something they think is great for you, you hate it, and then you grow up and wish you could get back into it - or stuck with it? :p I've just resigned myself to finding sheet music and playing on my own. I can't afford a teacher, and my lovely upright (and 10 years out of tune) piano is back at my parents' place, but I've got a little digital keyboard with me. No damper pedal though. :(

I tried playing piano as a kid, but the music I liked at the time (punk rock, alternative rock, etc) really didn't utilize pianos, so I gave it up, got a guitar and taught myself how to play. 15 years later, I wish I had stuck with piano because I find myself using a lot of synthesizers in my music, as well as using synths for ambient sounds and to fill out tracks. Of course, performing is a different thing than recording, so I can get away with being a bad pianist because I can overdub, punch in, and edit my mistakes. But still...nothing can ever match proper technique, and reading music, two things I cannot do.

Draco, your niece has real talent! That's extraordinary for 8 years old. I hope she sticks with it.

Very nice! I hope she keeps it up, what a great thing to be able to play piano - I've always loved pianos since you can play all the parts in a song. Very cool, thanks for sharing.
