Hi all,

I bought home my female kitten on the 2nd, she was vet checked and wormed (but currently doesn't weigh enough for her jabs. She was 8 weeks but the runt of the litter) and just got treated for ongoing diarrhea, which has now cleared up. Very happy, healthy, lively active girl and doing very well.

The vet advised me to wait a few weeks before we start the injections, both for her to get bigger but also for the diarrhea issues to settle but I also wondered if I needed to consider when to get her spayed? She will be done, no question (unless the vet says otherwise, which I think is very unlikely at this point!) But as she is a little smaller and has had the diarrhea issues, can anyone suggest or discuss their approach or if they had a smaller kitten too?

Obviously the vet wouldn't do it if they do not feel she meets their health requirements but I have a slight concern as I was told that sone females start their cycles as young as 4 months!!

What are some of your thoughts?

Hi Fenn,

Welcome to The Cat Site.

Female kittens can be spayed when they weigh over two pounds. Some kittens get spayed as early as 12 weeks but I usually get mine done when they are about 6 months old.

Is she going to be an indoor only cat? If you don't have any intact male cats at home and you make sure she doesn't get out there won't be any problems with her getting pregnant. Some female kittens do have their first heat cycle at four months, but this is usually because there are intact males either living in the same house as them or coming into regular contact with them outside.

So keep her indoors and give her time to recover from her tummy problems and put on a little weight.

In the US it is now common to spay healthy cats once they weigh 2 pounds (usually 8 weeks) but in your case this may take a little longer.  And absolutely before 6 months of age.

Thanks for you replies. I do have a male but he is not intact. I will be taking her for her first shots in the first week of June so they can weigh her again and after she's done with her vaccinations, hopefully she will be okay for the spay. Thanks again. :-)
