I can't say what is wrong with her but she's been sick for a year and now you want help, which I understand, but as a recovering addict you know that you can't get through your problems on your own and neither can this cat.  She is very sick, and there is only one answer to her problem, she needs a vet and without one the illness will take its course which could include any combination of worsening health suffering and death.

Do you have a credit card with any credit on it, or a friend or family member who can make an emergency contribution (directly to the vet)?

We are not vets, the best we can do is try to help you understand just how important that it is for you to do the right thing, including looking  for creative ways to finance some emergency vet care.  An initial visit need not be expensive, a basic exam, and some tests.

Also, see http://www.thecatsite.com/t/155462/cant-afford-a-vet-please-read

Hi Matt !  Welcome to the forum !

It might help if you'd give us some idea of your location - like, the name of the largest city that's close to you - or, the city/town you're in.

No promises, but there might just be an organization or resource that someone might be able to suggest......

Agreed - while the ones I know of have their hands full right now, I do know that there are some individuals and rescues that will sometimes offer assistance to pet owners who are in a rough situation, but whose animal(s) need(s) urgent care.

Is there any chance she may have been bitten by mosquitoes a couple of years ago?  Her symptoms sound exactly like a cat I had who developed heartworm and when the heartworm died it went into his lungs and caused an allergic reaction that made him cough and gag for awhile and then vomit white foam, which was actually foam that had come up from his lungs and that he was swallowing.  Treatment is cortisone type anti-inflammatory injections and lots of IV fluids, and sometimes that can save their life, and as my vet said, it doesn't hurt to try.

Exactly, I do it all the time in my rescue for a 'public' cat who's owner asks for help and it is fairly urgent, I will at least get them in to see my vet at my cost, then if prescribed any med that I already have, let them get it at my cost, sometimes no charge too, or I have also allowed them to make payments to me monthly and just pay the bill myself. (not personally but my rescue acct)

It's all about the cats and helping them.

Some vets are all about cash upfront, etc and some do actually 'get it' and will help.

3 things come to mind with your cat that will cause this, as well as what @Red Top Rescue

mentions as a possibility. Oh, also possibly an allergy he has acquired.

One is a hairball issue. Cats will actually digest small amts of their fur themselves, but only small amts, so during shedding season, overgrooming or long haired cats, they can't digest all of the fur, so it builds up and many have a difficult time hacking it up.

Have you tried Petromalt on his leg?

Like a tootsie roll size squirted on his front leg, he will lick it off and it had cod liver oil in it and will lubricate so that it will either slide on down or hack it up!

The next is a uri. Cats are unable to cough and clear their throat like we do. So they will get a buildup in the throat and can't clear it right, so an occasional hack is what you will get.

A vet will be able to look down his throat and see if there is phlegm built up and give you antibiotics for him.

Third one is cancer, a throat growth or tumor.

Not much else in the throat, so in my opinion, it's likely one of these 3 things.

Just get him seen asap, it shouldn''t cost more than the office exam and possibly clavamox. Unless of course it is #3.

Good luck.

If you can't afford more than a basic checkup, ask the vet about payment plans and explain your situation - you can even just ask on the phone about what payment methods they accept if you don't have the full balance up front. Even if you can get out a down payment, that you can afford the initial cost says more than walking in with completely empty pockets. Unfortunately I'm not very familiar with the Kingston area and it's quite a ways from anyone or any rescues I know of but I did manage to find this page that, closer to the middle, lists some organizations that can help with costs (including the Farley Foundation). Understandably a lot of them are location-specific, so if you have a means of transportation, that opens the doors a bit more in finding a vet who will be able to work with your financial situation.

While I was trying to find a cat rescue in Kingston, I did stumble upon this vet, Princess Animal Hospital - if you look at the right hand side, they offer a free coupon for the initial health exam for new clients. If your cat hasn't been to them yet, you can save some money there and use it towards further care she may need and this office looks pretty well favoured.

I don't know if this would be a bit of a stretch, but you could try contacting the Kingston Humane Society or OSPCA to see if they have any cat-rescue contacts who may be able to aid in this situation. Let them know you fully intend to take her to the vet, but need some help with funds or donations.

I'm so very sorry to hear this terrible news.  Is your cat still alive?  If yes can you get a second opinion, and maybe a different price?

This is terrible terrible news, and you have my condolences.

Oh my gosh, this is terrible, tragic news, I am so so sorry..........

Wow, I'm speechless here.......

So many of us here know just what you are going through, it seems impossible to bare so much hurt and heartache. But you will, we just do, because we are much stronger than we think. Give yourself time to heal, the first days feel unbearable now, so let yourself cry all you can. Talk to someone close to you who is a good listener, and we are all here for support to help get you through this pain and heartache.

Part of life is death, it is inevitable as we know. We don't get the plan for our lives in advance, and often times will suddenly lose our precious friend, companion, family member. To me, they are all equal in that, they are great losses, filling our hearts with pain and loneliness.

But in time, you will come to terms with it all. She knew she was loved, you had many years of companionship to each other, and you made the decision today that she knew was the greatest gift possible, of unselfish love and a pain-free, smooth exit.

While she is not here in body, she is still here, her spirit and energy soar now, no suffering, just free.

I am deeply saddened for your loss.

Big hugs :(

Don't regret it.   You lost a great friend but did her a great kindness.  Many people wait too long, but you didn't.

Our rainbow bridge forum is a great place to get support, http://www.thecatsite.com/f/19/crossing-the-bridge

And this grief support service of the ASPCA lets you talk privately and for free with a trained pet grief counselor.  They are compassionate people.

ASPCA Pet Loss Hotline at (877) GRIEF-10 (1-877-474-3310)

I'm so sorry for your loss.

I am sorry you had to put her down. I understand about a pet being the only thing you have. I wish it could have been something easier to treat.

Don't fret over your decision. You did the best thing you could have done with the information you had today.

A sad situation all around - however you did have 12 years of giving and receiving love.

Given your situation financially and the seriousness of her condition (no simple solution), it is best that you release her from pain and a prognosis of poor quality of life - and probably a short one. I agree, don't fret, your best friend is free. Earlier than you would have wanted for both of you, but inevitable.

Please note that cats live in the moment so they have no fear of the future, of their mortality. And that when a cat (or any animal, for the matter) is facing the end of their life, they have higher support from other's of their kind. Cats have their own angels... it is called an oversoul, and it eases them across the rainbow bridge. Understanding this is the only way I could accept having a companion animal. Passing over is not painful to them.

In time the good memories will come forward easing your current pain. I feel so very sorry for this outcome, but acted in a responsible manner.

if I am reading this right you were with her for a year, the problem was more recent

there was another first time poster recently who had to make the same decision...it came down to...better a day too early than a day too late

you knew the suffering she was in, the vet knew it was most likely incurable

you did the right thing IMHO

now you can do what I did after my cat died 6+ months ago

START TAKING CARE OF YOURSELF

TRUST ME, I DIDN'T GO TO THE DOCTOR BECAUSE I KNEW IF I DID I'D BE IN THE HOSPITAL AND SHE'D BE IN A CRATE

now I have doctor appts out the...
