ok, this doesn't look like either a spider or snake bite to me - is he walking on that leg? is there any pus? is he eating and drinking, and using the litter box or acting lethargic?

I'd stuff him in a carrier and off to the vet if possible...

That looks like an infected cat bite to me. Unless you actually SAW him get bitten by a snake?

I guess he is a young, un-neutered male, am I right?

He's probably been having a rough time being chased around and beaten up by bigger male cats. Wounds on the back legs like that are common, cats get bitten on the legs and tail as they run away.

You need to get him to the vet to have the wound cleaned and get some antibiotics for the infection. Ask your vet about getting him neutered as soon a soon can, it's the only way to stop him getting in fights.

Thank you. I will see if I can get him in a car. He was a stray and not very trusting. It has take me months to get him to trust me and to start loving on him. He's never been fixed. We live out on a farm but I just never saw anything like it. He will walk on it some and I am keeping him on my closed in porch so nothing else gets him and he can heal. He has some fever in that leg and it does have some pus coming out but it's creating deeper hole

It's actually better that the wound is open as this allows the pus to drain out. If it closes over before the infection is completely gone it will form an abscess, which is harder to heal.

Do you have a pet carrier? You could try putting that in the porch with him and putting his food in there. After a while he'll feel comfortable about going in there and you can close the door and get him to the vets. Cat nip also works to tempt cats into carriers, un-neutered male cats are especially fond of it.

Some vets have a humane trap they use to catch stray cats. Or maybe there is a group that does TNR in your area that you could borrow a trap from?

Good luck, keep us posted.

Thank you I will let you know. Can I boil it out with the peroxide and put neosporin on it? I know with our puppy they told us to but I wasn't sure about a cat?

Not sure, I've never tried that.

If I can't get a cat to the vet right away I clean the wound with hot salt water then put an antiseptic cream, same cream I put on my own cuts. But if you can handle him enough to clean the wound wouldn't it be better to try and put him in a carrier and take him to the vet? They would be able to neuter him at the same time as cleaning his cut. It's a really simple operation for male cats.

Getting him neutered is the best way to stop him from getting worse injuries next time, intact males tend to have short, violent lives.

If you can't get him to the vet, one thing you might try is a compress (a clean soft wash cloth or even wad of clean paper towel) dipped in hot water with a some peroxide or salt added and try to wrap it tightly around the leg and hold it there.  The wrapping is more tolerable than trying to bathe the area and the heat helps bring the puss out and help it drain, especially if there is an abscess - with luck and the right position it might open it up and the peroxide or salt helps disinfect the wound, as Norachan said. But I don't like the sound of "making a deeper hole", that sounds like an abscess, which can be dangerous if the wound closes up over it.  Neosporin may help (not the pain relief kind, just plain) but he will likely lick it off which isn't good, and a topical application like that won't do much good if there is something deep going on, it's more for surface scratch and scrape type wounds.

A vet is the best way to go,especially if there is lingering infection.  Some vets will prescribe antibiotics for you if you have an existing relationships and you explain you can't catch a cat to get it to them, though obviously they prefer to see the cat if at all possible.

I had a somewhat similar experience with one of my rescues who got a bite or cut on her tail that abscessed.  I was able to drain and clean it with a compress, but I took her to the vet anyway and turned out there was a pocket underneath that would likely have blown up again, so glad I did.
