How bad is BPA?

I've been avoiding BPA like the plague in my cats' canned rotation but, as finances get tighter, those 13+oz cans are looking awfully appealing.  Any opinions on this?  Having known some kitties with hyperthyroid, it's just not something I want to risk in my own cats.
