Hi all! First time post. My 5 year old male ended up with a blockage on Friday and we rushed him to the vet in a panic. 2 days and a bladder flush/catheter later he's home now. His blood work was perfect (yay!) but I'm still being a neurotic spaz worrying about him. The office is closed so I can't call them. What were your experiences with the recovery of your kitties from this procedure.

I just need some reassurance that he is going to be fine now.... I'm a nutcase. :p

Once in a while a cat while develop new problems peeing after the flush, tender urethra etc.  But if your cat is peeing well then that's the most important thing.

Increase water intake, consider a good pet fountain, prescription food, and lots of wet food.

If the blockage was due to struvite crystals then you can get an early warning system for the future as crystals usually form as urine becomes more alkaline.  Either PH testing strips from your vet with instructions, or, a special cat litter that changes color when urine become more alkaline.  A link follows.

Update on our Thomas,

After five days at the vet (we took him back the day after he came home) Thomas is home. He had to be cathetered again for 24 H and they monitored him for another day. He was peeing semi normal amounts at the vet office so he's not blocked, he has a spastic urethra now. They sent us with toradol, prazosin and an antibiotic. He hasn't peed much since he got home a couple hours ago but he's trying and a small tiny amount does come out.

I'm trying not to worry too much for now... Time will tell and I'm cautiously hopeful cause they wouldn't have sent him home if he wasn't urinating to their satisfaction.

Pray for our boy and his irritated wee wee...

It is quite common to have a spastic urethra after a catheter.  The prazosin is the med that helps control the spasm.  The toradol is a NSAID, prescribed for pain and inflammation.   I don't mean to panic you.  Vets do prescribe it on a short term basis, but there are lots of people who say never give your cat a NSAID because of possible kidney impairment. If pain is an issue, you might discuss Buprenex with your vet, which (I understand) is processed through the liver and easier on the kidneys.  If your cat did not have a bacteria culture, the antibiotic is being given as a prevention.  You might think about giving your cat some probiotics (a couple hours away from the antibiotic) to replace the good bacteria.

Blockages are never fun, I wish your kitty good healing!  Sometimes it takes a little time to fully recover.
