My mama cat, Kitty, had kittens about 4 days ago and she seems absolutely miserable. She feeds them and keeps up with them, but when I check on her she always looks sad. Whenever they sleep, she gets up and walks around, looks out the window, eats, and whatever. Then, as soon as one cries she runs back. Also, when they cry she sits on them. Is that normal? To sit on the little babies? I know I probably sound crazy, but she is just not herself at all.

has kitty been to the vet, with the kittens, for an after giving birth vet check? this vet check is to make sure momma cat came through giving birth without complications/problems, and that all the kittens are healthy too.

may i ask -- what food are you feeding momma cat? it takes a lot of energy for her through the whole process of being pregnant, giving birth to her kittens, and now nursing and caring for them. she should be eating as much as she wants to, as well as her food being kitten food. if she doesn't like the kitten food, then try mixing some of it into some adult cat food that she likes.

cats hide illness extremely well. and you know your own cat the best. so when you say that "she is just not herself at all", this (to me) points to the possibility that kitty might not be feeling well/there could be a medical issue going on. if it were me, i'd have your vet check kitty to rule out or treat any possible medical issues.

She hasn't been to the vet, I will see about an appt tomorrow. She wasn't real happy about us being near the babies at first and I didn't want to stress her out. I read thy if a young cat feels overwhelmed she may hurt her babies.
I've been giving her kitten food since I found out she was prego, and she loves it. I keep a full dish in the kitchen where her food normally is and another beside her 'bed' where she stays with the babies. And make sure she has clean water and a full dish at all times.
I kind of think part of it is we're not letting her outside, but I want to get her fixed before we let her back out. (She is inside/outside cat). We have homes for all but one of her kittens, and don't need anymore.

At first I thought she was just tired, but now that she's venturing away from the babies a little more she's still a bit lethargic.

With baby blues you mean "After delivery depression"?  Not as I know of, at least, I cant remember I have heard about it.  Being tired after the delivery, yes, esp if undernourished, it happens.   But as you give her good food, and her overall health seems good....  Yes as said above, next step could be a vet visit, if your vet is any decent.   Most dont go to vet after a normal, uncomplicated delivery. But here you yourself see there is something amiss.    Trust your gut feeling!

You could try with Feliway spray or diffuser.  Cant hurt, may help...  Some nice, relaxing music perhaps too?

I agree with you, dont let her out, till she is spayed  (and the kittens bigger).

Her behavior in rest sounds normal.   Sitting on her babies is not optimal, but forumists tell this sometimes, so the babies apparently dont gets hurt of this.  Or at least, not so hurt as ones thinks...

Good you are respectful and careful, but you dont need to overdo it.  After all, almost all breeders and most rescuers do weigh the kittens from day 1, so apparently its possible to touch them, even with young nervous (or shy) moms.  As long as you do it respectflully, so the mom sees you and her kitten.  You do the weighting and look see quickly, practically in seconds.     Have some cloth on the scale, so it isnt cold and the baby wont protest.

Some very experienced rescuers normally dont weigh their babies, but it is just because them being so experienced, they see by a glance if there is something amiss. Also, they see by a glance or by just a touch the weigh development in the kittens.    ALL others are recommended to weigh the kittens every day...  (unless the mom is really high strung and or verry shy Of course, there are always exceptions to all rules).

Please continue to report and ask!

Good luck!

ps.  Now thinking on, I do got  a vague memory someone else forumist used the expression Baby Blues, as I was stuck there too...  So it seems it may happen, although rarely....   The answer in rest is exactly the same.

Firstly I though you meant Baby blue, ie babies with heart problems, yes it happens, usually they wander on sooner or later, before they go into adulthood.
