Hi everyone. I'm new here. I have a question to all of you with cats that tend to get overweight. Someone told me about this cat feeder in which the cat has to work a little bit to get the food to drop, a few morsels at a time. I could have sworn she said she got it at petco but I can't find anything like that there or on petsmart or even amazon. This was a while back and I can't remember who told me about it (I've slept since then) to call and ask. But I do remember that her cat had lost a little weight since she got it. Does anyone have a feeder like this and where did you get it ?

I think you are looking for a treat ball. It can be used for hard food. You can also search for puzzle feeders.

If your cat is overweight though, the problem is probably due more to the type of food and how you feed. Dry food is way too high in carbs for cats who are obligate carnivores. If you also free feed, then your cat may be eating too much. Wet food is much better for cats, in portions that supply the correct amount of calories for slow weight loss or maintenanceof ideal weight.

This is exactly right.  I have an overweight cat, and no matter what we tried, until we took away ALL kibble, he did not start to lose weight.  Now that he eats only wet food that I measure at each meal, he is losing.  But I even have to watch him like a hawk and make sure he doesn't nudge he way into his siblings' food dishes before they finish as he simply inhales his food and they seem to enjoy the taste of theirs

But with all that being said, if you want to make one of those treat dispensers, and measure the calories in what you put in them, they are a good brain exercise for them for when you are gone and can't play with them.  You can use any plastic contain that has a lid, and make your own!  (like a cottage cheese container or yogurt cup if it has a lid).  Simply cut a couple of holes in the container barely larger than a piece of whatever treat you are putting inside.  Then put the item(s) inside, snap the lid on and let them at it.  You might need to shake it up a few time and show them how the treat will eventually fall out, then they can start rolling it around and do it themselves.  I wouldn't put more than a couple in there though.  And if you can, put something like Purebites or Wholelife or something that doesn't have carbs in it.
