My cat Nico is about to turn 1 years old. He has recently gone from vomiting 1 to 2 times a month to 3 to 4 times a week. He always vomits at night typically around 11pm. His energy levels seem the same and he doesn't seem to be losing weight. He has always had a sensitive stomach and is on a prescription cat food for it. I took him to the vet last weekend, they ran an X ray & found no blockages. I've cut out wet food and tried feeding him small portions several times a day but neither has helped. Not sure what to do. Could a cat so young already have a food allergy?

Thanks in advance for your advice and input!

Hi there,

Vomiting can be food related as in eating too fast or some ingredient in the food is not agreeing with him or is causing him to have an adverse reaction. Vomiting could also be a symptom of chronic inflammation of the stomach due to toxicity from a drug he is receiving, something he ingested recently, or as the result of a virus or infection. Does the vomit contain food or is he throwing up just bile and what color is the bile? This would be a clue to what may be going on. Some further questions :

1. Does he get fed around the time that he vomits.

2. What food have you been serving in the last six months. Have you changed foods in the last six months.

3. When you say that you cut out the wet food, does this mean that he is now getting dry food.

I would cut out dry food and keep him on the wet food as the stuff in dry food is often more difficult for a kitty to digest and pass through the system.  What kind of prescription food is he on and what else are you feeding him?

Also, he may not be able to tolerate any fish varieties of food.  Some cats just can't do fish.
