I have 10 month old sisters (litter mates)Ashes and Misty (Totally indoor kitties) that were inseparable until Misty had a collar accident. The collar got half in her mouth and half around the back of her head during self grooming and it seriously cut her tongue. I had to take her in for stitches which kept her at the vets over night. (I wish I had known how dangerous collars could be before this happened!!!! This was a safety collar mind you! Our kitties are now and forever collarless!!!! I will never put one of those nasty things on them again!) The big problems is that Ashes (the more docile of the two usually) Is hissing, batting at and generally avoiding and being mean to Misty. The vet said this may happen because 90% of a cats world is understood through their noses and Misty would smell like the vet and not herself. Does anyone know what I can do to help them be friends and buddies again? How long does this usually last? We are soooooooo sad to see them like this! They were never away from each other since birth! Please help if you can! I read a thread here about making cats smell alike but can't find it anymore? Please any help would be soooooo appreciated!
Thank you!

Yep that's the thread Gaye thanks so much for finding it for me! Your an angel kittie! I had thought of trying vanilla extract cause I don't think it will hurt the cats if they lick it off so maybe I will try that! I'll let you all know how it works! I am so very glad I found this web site! thank you "The Cat Site" for being in existence!!!! You have taught me so much about my new kitties!

well guess what? The problem solved itself today. My babies were sleeping together on the same bed! Yeah!
<-----(Ashes and Misty!)
Just in time for the vet recheck on Misty's tongue!! Sheesh! I was so worried about it starting all over again after the separation that I told the vet I was bringing Ashes along and she could just check her out too so they would smell the same! She just laughed and said it was a good idea! All went well they are now consoling each other on the nasty vet smells! LOL Thanks again for the info! If it ever comes up again I will try the vanilla!

In the future you can put baby food on the cat who came back from the vet - this takes away the horrible vet smell that causes cats to hiss at the poor kitty who had an overnight at the vet. Also, all cats love chicken and turkey babyfood as a treat (that is what we give the cats at the shows). When I have an orphan kitten I want a nursing mom to adopt, I put baby food all over it and the mom starts licking - once that happens they accept the baby!

Rene,
Thanks for the great idea! I would never have thought of Chicken or Turkey baby food. I will definitely remember this in the future when one kitty has to go to the vet with out the other. I love this web site and all its wonderful peeps!

Misty and Ashes
are reaping the benenfits of all of your knowledge as well! They are happy Kitties and thank you too!!

Thanks again Rene!
