Hello everyone!

My name is Elizabeth. I own a classy, tuxedo cat I named Nemo. He is 11 years old. I got him from a shelter at 2 months old where he was promptly neutered before being sent home with us. I wonder often if his health would be different had I kept him intact for another year? Not much I can do now.

He was originally fed some cheap colorful kibble, for a few years. He began to throw up, and I did some research and decided that I would switch his food. I stuck to Purina One for sensitive systems. He threw up his food, but it was rare. I kept him on that for another few years. It wasn't until he was about eight and I began to research dog food, that I started thinking about changing his diet around. There were some issues with his health after going for a vet visit, and now his diet consists of all wet food- either pet guard or nature's variety limited ingredients. Absolutely no seafood as I have learned he is allergic to it. I plan to ask a few question in the health forum regarding his health, I will look around to see if my questions have already been covered.

Along with Nemo, I have a two year old American Pit Bull Terrier, Sunny. I do a lot of dog shows and am getting into obedience and other dog sports.

Nemo is mostly an indoor cat, but he does like to go out front and lounge on a cat tree I have on the porch, or lay on the boat. I've always allowed him free run of the house and time outside.

Well I'm glad to be joining! I've always thought myself a cat lover, but what kind of cat lover doesn't know a thing about cat nutrition! Hope to learn lots here. Thank you !

Welcome to the Site! Nemo is beautiful! The consensus now is to neuter as soon as the kitten is 2 pounds or more, so the only thing I think you missed out on is him spraying everything or running away because of his hormones taking over! My cats are on Purina one now, I can't seem to get them to eat much wet food, they are offered every morning and just lick the gravy. Please keep posting on your progress!

Thank you all! I simply adore him. :)

Interesting. In dogs, the consensus (depending on the breed) is to wait for the dog to fully mature. For some that may be at around 8-12 months, and for some large breeds not until they are at least 3 years old.

Nemo was tiny when I got him. Lots of people think he's a female cat. They tell me that his nose is that of a girl cat, and I'm like, No he's a boy!

He is pretty thin right now, I'm working on his weight, but since I switched him off kibble he has been very active. I just wish he wasn't so sensitive to his food. I tried raw for a while, despite my vet's strong recommendation that I stick with Eukanuba. I'll have to share his health journey later.

If you wait for a male cat to be fully mature before neutering them you get problems eg Spraying - something intact males do to mark their territory. Once they start doing this it is a very hard habit to break them of.
And nobody wants their house to smell of cat pee lol :lol3:

Neutering before these instincts kick in is highly recommended to stop these unwanted behaviours.

Good luck with your beautiful boy and I hope you get his weight up ;)

Thank you Gemsgem! Gorgeous cat btw.

In your experience, at around what age do the male cats begin to spray?

Oh thank you very much :heart4:

It depends when they reach sexual maturity, each cat is different some reach it early and some are late starters. But usually somewhere between 10-18 months old. :catguy:

Hi Eizabeth and welcome to TCS. Nemo is gorgeous, and he looks all boy to me (l think your friends need glasses
 )

lt's good to hear you're looking into nutrition with regard to his health, that's what brought me here too. l also have a skinny cat who would hurl every day. Now he's still skinny (vet says excellent shape) but yaks up food only rarely any more. l went raw too. I look forward to reading about Nemo's health journey.
