Autumn has had a large clump of hair on her back, she now has a few more smaller clumps along the back toward her tail.  She doesn't seem to be in pain and she doesn't seem to be itchy.

Anyone have any idea of what this could be.  Unfortunately I haven't been able to get her to the vet, she is just about impossible to get her into the carrier.  I have health problems which makes it very difficult for me.  I have had to cancel many vet appointments because of this.

Is she an older cat ?

It sounds like she is not grooming herself as well as she use to and her fur is now starting to matt/clump together.

When cats stop grooming themselves in certain hard to reach places as they get older. The dead hair doesn't all just fall out, some stays stuck in the new hair and then clumps together over time and matts start to form.

Regular grooming with a comb ( not a brush ) will stop this happening. You can also get a cat/dog groomer to do this for you. Some groomers will actually come to your home to do this so no need to put her in carrier then

She never let me groom her and I know no one else will be able to either.  I adopted her when she was about 3 years old and she is the type of cat where you can't pick her up or do anything to her.  She sits on my lap all the time and lets me pet her but I cannot clip her nails or anything.  I would never be able to give her any type of meds either, she becomes a wild cat when I want to do anything to her.  With all this said, she is a loving cat.

Autumn is now about 9 yrs. old.  Thank you.
