poinsettias aren't just toxic...they are DEADLY TOXIC...I think you should call the vet and tell him she ate it and approximately how much

I definitely would be contacting the vet very quickly.  Poinsettias are one of the worst plants any pet could ingest.  Please let us know how you make out.

Are you referring to a particular variation of this plant? The research I've done on the standard poinsettia comes up repeatedly with information suggesting that mild-mid level irritation in the gastrointestinal tract and itching tends to be the main issue and it isn't very severe.

She seems fine now and only vomited the once, over two weeks ago. Her behaviour around the house is completely back to normal.

While Poinsettias are toxic to a point, I wouldn't consider them 'deadly toxic'. Moreover, its the milky sap that is considered more at risk for stomach upset and/or vomiting. That said, it is good that you have placed this plant elsewhere.

From ASPCA list of toxic plants :

"Clinical Signs: Irritating to the mouth and stomach, sometimes causing vomiting, but generally over-rated in toxicity".

Yes, I also read this description of the plant and the potential symptoms in cats. I have been very worried about her health and paranoid to an extent, as I am a complete novice when it comes to cat health, but this is one thing that has actually set my mind at ease a bit, as the descriptions of symptoms related to Poinsettias apply to my cat fully and the research I have done suggests that although it would have been far from pleasant for her, it isn't something considered deadly. It was the Pointsettia that about three weeks ago she was particularly interested in (standing up to sniff it, trying to touch it, etc) and when my mother was here and looked after the cat for that weekend, she told me that the cat had been playing with the plant and got a leaf off the tree and could have eaten it (it wasn't around when we got back). So my money is on the hunch that she ate it and the photo further up the page is the consequence of that.

I think we all go through something like this from time to time, no matter how experienced we are.
Glad to read that she is feeling fine and back to normal.

I have an Oxalis plant (shamrock) that can be quite toxic to cats and I have had to move this twice due to the curiosity and persistence in wanting to get at it, of my little tuxedo. It now sits in a tall plant stand.

I must confess that I am one of the 70% who believed that poinsettias are very harmful to cats.  After doing some reading, I will reduce that to "harmful" as it will still make them sick but it is not as bad as some of the other plants.  I will still not have one in the house because I have two furry munchkins who like to try to visit my plants so needless to say, all my plants are where they cannot get to them.   Plants interests cats and thankfully, our Poison Control does have a list of what ones to watch.  One thing I have done which did draw their attention away from my plants is buying them cat grass.  This pampered pair get fresh cat grass every second week.  Though they can't reach my plants, they also don't sit near where they are staring, planning and plotting to get to them.  I am glad your kitty is back to normal.  Give her a big snuggle.

Just to give an update... It's not good news. What the first vet I went to gave her was something which supressed her symptoms, meaning she kept seeming ok then going back to being ill once the effects wore off. I took her to a new vet yesterday and the prognosis was bad. He tested for FIV and FELV and they came back negative but the blood test results showed levels of everything in her blood were low and that her temperature was very high. The vet could also feel something was hard or swollen in her lower abdominal area. They couldn't diagnose exactly the problem at that moment but they spent an hour an a half with us doing all the tests they could do and giving her an liquid in IV form to counter dehydration. They recommended that I then take her to an overnight vet hospital where she would receive care through the night and further tests are being run this morning (she was too agitated last night to continue).

I'll be going to see her after 11am today to find out if there is a diagnosis and what it is. I've been told that because of her symptoms she she could die any day, depending on how she reacts to treatment and whether the exact issue can be quickly identified. It feels so horrible to be at home without her here. Me and my girlfriend have been in tears. Can't really say much else but I am willing her to survive. She seems strong still despite all this- she fought three of us when we were trying to get the IV drip into her paw/leg area and when two vets tried to take her blood sample! I am focusing on that at the moment.

This is sorta like when I broke my ribs and discovered a mole on my back was changing, and even worse, I still haven't been able to get an appointment with a dermatologist. So you are ahead of the game there!

Are they going to do an ultrasound?

No way she's pregnant?

I hope they find what's wrong and cure it

Thank you. Me too.

There is definitely no way she's pregnant as I was waiting for her to finish her heat cycle so I could get her sterilized, then she vomited so I took her to the vets and decided to wait until that was sorted, then she never came back into heat as she became ill. Not only that but she is a house cat and doesn't have any contact with other cats. They are going to run all bloodwork first then if they can't work out what's wrong they will probably then ask me if I want them to proceed with the ultrasound.

Yeah it's very much like what you describe. Poor kitty must feel awful and has to stay at the vets. I need to go and give her some cuddles today even if they say they're keeping her for longer. Don't get me started on moles changing - I have two and I am frightened to do anything about them (have left them for years now). Starting to think I need to take some action on them though!

They don't speak English but I speak Italian enough to understand plus anything that I don't quite get my girlfriend will understand.

I just called them. They said she's anemic. I just looked the symptoms up and it's precisely what she's been like, to the letter. It particularly explains the low blood cell count. Poor little thing. They want to keep her for monitoring for a few days while they begin to administer treatment, so I can't have her home yet but I'm going to visit her daily starting this afternoon. It's 11.20am here in Italy.

Thanks for your messages, enjoy your sleep. Goodnight, or 'buonanotte', as they say here!

I am sorry to hear about this latest news. This must have come as quite a shock to find that there is something else going on, after the plant-eating episode.

Glad that she is in a good place and being looked after. Many positive vibes that she's going to be okay.

Thank you. The people in the place she's being looked after are very nice and she is already looking much better. Her reactions are back to being fast and she wanted to play with the little toy mouse I brought for her to leave in her area. She was happy to see us and started to purr and wanted cuddles, which was nice to see.

Upon talking to the staff there they informed me they are keeping her on a fluid drip to continue to rehydrate her (it seems to be working well as her nose was wet) and they're giving her cortizone to get her stronger again. That's something I'll have to give her too for some time, depending on how her body reacts and improves over a month or two. But I am just relieved to see her feeling better and to know that she's being looked after so she can recover.

Off to see her again a bit later today and I think I'll be able to have her home tomorrow night.
