Denice, we had that thought as well, too concentrated maybe, we don't know - Day 18 today - between postings Smokes threw up a couple of times - the Pepcid as recommended on this thread does seem to help - it is interesting that usually when she does throw up the food (which is hard Fancy Feast) looks to not be anywhere near digested (hard food still distinguishable and still solid) - she did throw up once during the nite and it looked completely digested (hard food not solid but smooth creamy like) - yesterday the new order of syrup was delivered to our clinic here in Arizona from the clinic in Dallas - picked it up and started her on the new batch today - the Dallas clinic has flavored it (beef, we had options of chicken, fish or angus beef) and they added something to help with the stomach upset - we will see how it goes - again, this bottle was supposedly mix for a 30 day treatment of .5 mL a day - I can not at this time tell if this treatment is working yet or not - time will tell - we take her in on May 31st for blood work...

Day 21 - Smokes threw up her morning feeding - some appear to have been digested and 1/4 of it still looked solid - don't know what this means - hopefully this treatment is helping on some level .

I am getting terrible at updates - forgot to say she did eat a some afterward (I put down another flavor of the Fancy Feast dry) and did see her drinking some water.

Smokey just threw up some food - she already had a morning feed and her treatment for today around 6 AM - what she threw up was not digested still whole pieces - still not sure what this means?

We went to our clinic for blood work yesterday - our doctor was very pleased with the way Smokey's mouth looked - no redness, still a little puffy swollen in the very back area - we got home and later in the afternoon she threw up a little food and huge fur ball (first time we have seen a fur ball) - we give her a lot of brushing - not yet on her stomach for she is still outside wirey - we were having happy thoughts that all was looking pretty good for Smokey until the doctor called with her results of the blood work - it seems that her liver values are 4 times what they should be - all her values looked good when she had her initial treatment to extract her teeth and clean up her mouth and also good when we took the initial blood work for the Dallas clinic 30 days ago in order to get the syrup treatment - I am wondering if this has anything to do with the first bottle of treatment not being mixed correctly, however, when I spoke to the Dallas clinic when we knew the first bottle was not going to make the 30 days I asked if we were somehow doing some damage with over dosing and they did not feel that would be the case - our doctor is going to fax the results to the Dallas clinic on Monday and hopefully get a call back from them as to what their thoughts are on the spike in her liver values - our doctor advised to keep on as we have been for now, however, for now we have made an executive decision to lower her dose from .5 mL to .3 mL - this will hopefully keep the stomatitis at bay until we can figure out what is going on - then we got up this morning to find that Smokes had throw up again in the nite/morning sometime - we do the best we can at this point.

We are in to about 5 weeks of the LPS treatment - Smokey threw up a huge fur ball this morning and she just threw up her mid day feeding - other than these two she has not throw up since Saturday - we still have not heard back from our clinic on if they have had a response and/or opinion from the Dallas clinic on the results of her blood work and her liver values being so high.

Finally got a message from our clinic this morning - seems the Dallas clinic has advised to take Smokey off the treatment syrup for 2 weeks and then do blood work again - we can only do as we are advised to do - we had taken her dosage down to 3 mL from 5 mL - I do have to wonder if her liver values are up because the first bottle was not mixed correctly?

I have a friend who had to take her kitty off of the syrup periodically as well, so don't feel disheartened.

Stephanie thank you for the encouraging thoughts - well, Smokey threw up a couple of days ago, I think it was Thursday in the nite or early morning (it was dry by the time I saw it and it was not digested)  - I didn't put a lot of thought into it at the time because after I clean it up a couple of hours later she threw up a huge fur ball - a sure sign that at least she is grooming herself - I found she had thrown up again this morning (again she must have done it sometime during the nite) - Tuesday will be two weeks off the syrup and we go to have her blood work done again - I hope we are not back-sliding...

We got the results of the blood work back - our clinic called this morning with the news that all her numbers look perfect - I felt and still feel her liver #'s were due to the high concentration of the first bottle - our Vet-Tech here (because our Dr. is out of the office this week) got the results to the Texas Clinic and spoke with them got the OK to start her back on the treatment if we chose - at this point I am confused as to what to do - I could use some advice if there is some out there on this subject - questions would be:

1.  Would you start her back on the treatment immediately - we have about a weeks worth left of the last bottle we got - I will have to order another bottle and it will take the seven days to get here and keep her on the treatment.

or

2.  Would you leave her off the treatment and see if the stomatitis flares back up and see how long it will take if it does flare back up and then start her on the treatment again?

when we where at our clinic yesterday the Vet Tech had a look in Smokey's mouth and reported that she has really cleared up and that only a little redness is still present which in my mind would suggest that a flare up sooner than later is possible (I am still unclear as to what makes it pop up and/or it can go away all together).

This is my first experience with stomatitis so I am very much at a loss as to how to react and it seems that each individual feline case is different and unique.

All the advice I am getting now is that it is my call as to if to start her back on the treatment or not.

Thanking anyone in advance for your time and assistance.

We made the decision to continue with the treatment - started on Wednesday the 25th of June continued with the second bottle - order another the 3rd bottle on Friday the 27th - received the 3rd bottle yesterday the 2nd of July - have made an appointment for blood work on July 26th - Smokes is doing just great at this time - we made the decision to continue on with the 3rd bottle to hopefully knock this stomatitis into remission - depending on the results on the 26th we may take her off the treatment and see how it goes - thanking everyone for their continued support and help while we deal with this terrible stomatitis - Smokes had even gain some more weight - she still will not eat soft food, still on hard.

Hopefully her liver numbers will stay down and can get her back in good health.  I have not had to deal with stomatitis but I have heard it is awful.  All of this autoimmune stuff is so unpredictable.  Many kitties have the extractions and then are fine, others aren't so fortunate.  I think all of us have had a bad tooth and no what that feels like I can only imagine what this would feel like.

My updated reply to SophieC - Thank you Denice for giving my link to SophieC -

Hi SophieC - thank you asking - Smokes is doing Great compared to when she first showed up at our door on Thanksgiving week 2013 - although, in having said that I should have updated last week - about last Wednesday she had started throwing up again so we took her off the LPS treatment - our clinic has advised that her throwing up they don't think has anything to do with the stomatitis, I too think she is probably got a fur-ball situation that is affecting her digestion - she has thrown up fur balls in the last couple of weeks - we had an appointment for today to have blood work done, but, I rescheduled for Monday because her doctor and her regular technician will be in the office on Monday not today, so just to make sure I would like to advise our clinic on her throwing up and get their opinion - we will go on Monday have blood work done to make sure the treatment on this 30 day round did not affect her liver values and get an opinion on how her mouth is looking - last we check she still had some puffiness in the back region, but, no redness/flaming - today would have been 30 days into her 3rd bottle of treatment and we had planned on stopping the treatment to see how she fairs without it - they say we will not know how she fairing with having some control over the stomatitis until you stopped the treatment - in the beginning I thought thru reading the post that led me to the treatment that it was a 30 day treatment designed to put the stomatitis into remission, however, it depends on the patient and the degree of the disease - so, depending on your case and how severe would depend on how long you would have to be on the treatment - you didn't say if you are working directly with the Dallas clinic or you are going thru your own clinic - we went thru our clinic here in Arizona and they work with the Dallas clinic - if you are not working directly with the Dallas clinic you will need to send them blood work and have your vet sign off on a agreement - I would suggest if you are not aware that the treatment can be mixed with flavor (beef or chicken) and they can add something to help settle the stomach and to do so if you are going to begin the LPS - to which if you read my post when we first started Smokey on the treatment we believe that because our clinic mixed it wrong and it was highly concentrated it was upsetting her stomach so the advisors on my thread suggested some Pepcid to which worked beautifully - with the 1st bottle because it was mixed incorrectly we were 2 weeks into the treatment and got the 2nd bottle to which had the flavoring and additive for the stomach upset - after the total of 30 days (2 weeks on the highly concentrated and 2 weeks on the 2nd bottle) we got blood work done and her liver values were extremely high and the Dallas clinic advised to take her off the treatment for 2 weeks and then have blood work done again - so we did - Smokes did well for those 2 weeks - we had blood work done after 2 weeks and her liver values were excellent (I to this day believe that the liver values were so high because the 1st bottle was too highly concentrated for her liver to have to filter) - then it was up to us to make the decision to either put her back on the treatment for another 30 days or not - we made the decision to go another 30 days and then to stop the treatment completely and see what happens - that is where we are now until last Thursday - in having said all that, this is the first time we have had to deal with a case of stomatitis and find it to be a iffy disease of sorts - if you have read about the many different cases it is just that it depends on the case - Smokey did not have full extraction of teeth - my clinic was one as is the Dallas clinic that does not believe that full extraction will necessarily make the stomatitis go away - from what I read it is a 80 / 20% ratio with full extraction, meaning that even with full extraction that 20% will still continue to have the stomatitis - in my opinion in our case the LPS treatment was the best option for us - I am one that avoids steroid treatments if at all possible - none of us know what is exactly in the LPS treatment but I was assured that there is no steroids of any type or any real harmful drugs in the mix - if you read the origins/background of the treatment the doctor (who has now passed, but, the clinic still administers the treatment) was known as the `founding father of animal dentistry' and that in itself made a huge impact on my decision to bring this subject of this treatment up with my clinic - you probably are aware that you have to administer my mouth either by liquid or I believe they can make it in pill form - with Smokes she was and still is a little skittish from her prior lifestyle but with a little help from our clinic in showing us how to use the `towel burrito style' of dosing we have managed beautifully - I believe that Smokey is doing really well all things consider and her quality of life has improved beyond measure - her coat is lovely we brush her and with her throwing up fur-balls we know she is grooming herself (when she should up at our door she was matted from her shoulders to her tail) - she is not drooling and hasn't for months - her eating is still a little perplexing when she first showed up and was so bad she would eat anything and everything and one day she just flipped a switch and would eat nothing but hard food and only Fancy Feast - we have tried everything, but, she still has continued to put on weight and is holding her weight (she showed up weigh a little over 5 lbs and she is now a little over 8 lbs) - I hope some of this will somewhat help you make your decision - I would like to hear more about your case if you have a mind to chat about it - it would help all us understand more of how to treat stomatitis - here's a link (just case you haven't read enough already to drive one mad) to a Facebook link I came across and again you have to keep in mind everyone has an opinion - trust you gut and instincts on your case and I am sure you will do great - I always feel I am the advocate to make the best decisions on my case -  https://www.facebook.com/FelineStomatitis - again, if you have time and inclination to give more detail on your case I sure would like to know - good luck and keep us posted (no pun)

Smokey would have been on the LPS treatment for 60 days on Saturday the 26th.  We took her off the treatment on Thursday due to her throwing up (I don't think it has anything to do with treatment we just made to call to stop) - we went for blood test today which would be her 4th since starting the treatment - it will be a reference point for the 2nd blood work in that if her liver values are OK this time it would go to say the 2nd blood work which was taken 30 days after being on the treatment (2 weeks over concentrated and 2 weeks on normal mixture) was due to the over concentrated bottle.  We have decided to take her off the treatment for now to see how long she goes with or without a flare up - this is the only way it seems that we will know if the treatment is/does work.

Got a call back this morning from our Doctor at our Clinic - looks like Smokeys liver value continue to be good - from this I would conclude that her second blood work came back with high liver values due to the over concentration of not mixing the first bottle correctly - my doctor also said she had a look in Smokeys mouth yesterday and there was still some redness inflammation puffy-ness in the back of her throat - I was going to take her off the syrup altogether - I think I will give the Dallas clinic a call and pose the question what should we expect to see all indication of any redness and inflammation or will it always be present waiting to flare back up? - the answer to this will help me make my decision as to what to do.

I just got off the phone with Kelly at the Dallas clinic - I ask her the questions and she reminds me that we are dealing with a chronic disease - to that I have decided to order another bottle and continue on with the treatment - it would break my heart to take her off only for the stomatitis to come raging back - she is doing so well at this point except for the occasional throwing up - Kelly is going to add more to the mixture for stomach upset - Smokey will get about a 2 week break off the treatment for we took her off last Thursday and by the time we receive this the 4th bottle will be another 7 days for a total of near to 2 weeks.

starting our 4th bottle of LPS treatment today - Smokey had about a 2 week break off the treatment and did well with the exception of throwing up occasionally - my clinic has advised that the throwing up does not have anything to do with the stomatitis - we are going to keep her on the treatment for another 30 days.

After a week on the 4th bottle of her treatment Smokey seemed to be having adverse reactions (I get concerned over the mixing of the treatment once it gets to our clinic, not so sure) - diarrhea, not eating as much, throwing up - we took her off the treatment, we were going to go to a week on and a week off - however, she has been off for a week now and we have decided to just leave her off and see what happens - her appetite is back, her stools are getting a lot better, she threw up but it had a hair ball so we figure that's OK.

A long time since a update - it has been almost a year since we took Smokes off the LPS treatment - this past year has been amazing - she is thriving, for the most part healthy and doing terrific for a feline that was so very sick when she showed up at the door on Thanksgiving week 2013 - hard to believe she has been with us now 2 years come Thanksgiving (November) 2015 - she has the what I could call usual kitty kat digestive hair ball episodes, but hey, if that's all we got we will take it - we give her coconut oil to which she seems to like, also helps her coat to which she grooms a lot, hence the fur-balls (I give her as much brushing that she will allow to help - she still has a wirey side from her time from being outdoor and wild as it were) - as far as the LPS treatment I can not say for sure if it was the cure, but, I can say it got us thru a tough spell without steroids and to me that's positive - the LPS may not be for all cases, however, I would say in our case it was what got us thru - she has not shown any signs of the stomatitis returning - not having the knowledge of her full life health history I believe her digestive system will always be suspect - her stools are not always what I would like to see, but, sometimes she gives me one that looks good and normal (funny, the simple things in life that makes one
and puts a
bounce in our day).  Thank you to TheCatSite, the advisors for all they do to help, and the other contacts I have had in regard to the LPS treatment.
