Let me preface is this thread by mentioning that I am certainly no expert, and that I can't promise that my solution will work for you. My cat is just shy of 21 and I'll be damned if I let him starve himself to death, so I came up with what I can only describe as a lucky cure for my kitty. I can't think of any particular reason this should be dangerous for you to try but PLEASE ask your vet and use your own common sense when trying this!

My cat Siren decided one day out of the blue that food was for chumps and he had better things to do with his time (ie: sleep and drool on me and my clothing) than to deign to eat the offerings I left him. Now when you have a cat as old as mine you start to realize that pretty soon it will be their time to go, but starvation wasn't going to be the way I lost my cat.  So, I started a desperate quest to find ANYTHING my cat would eat, the higher in calories it was the more I wanted him to try it. After getting a fairly clean bill of health from the vet he told me to go ahead and try kitten food if I wanted to. Kitten food is pretty awesome, but from what I understand it can cause issues in some adult cats, so use your own discretion if you want to try it.  After doing a fair amount of research I landed on Blue Buffalo's Healthy Growth Kitten food (it has 586 cal per cup!) and this was working fairly well but my cat has more teeth missing than remaining at this point and I was really wanting to keep him on a wet food diet. Clearly I was going to have to compromise on a few things here, but I wanted to give him the best I could. One day on a whim I ran a cup of his dry food through an unused coffee grinder I had lying around and started to sprinkle it on his food thinking it would give him more calories per bite. Pretty soon I noticed he was carefully licking the bottom of the bowl to get the last bits of powder. I ground down another cup of food and mixed a little water with it to make a pate, and my cat was in suddenly in kitty heaven, he started to snort like a piglet and he devoured every last bit. YAY!

If you have stuck with me through this rambling message, congratulations! Bellow you will find my recipe for kitty meal success.

Siren's Daily Food
1) Free fed dry food (Blue Buffalo Healthy Growth Kitten)
2) One part powdered dry food mixed with two parts water to make a pate (rough estimate, feel free to add more or less). Make sure to wait 5 or so min for the water to be absorbed and adjust if needed.
3) One can of whatever Fancy Feast flavor is closest to me

Is this the most healthy food? Absolutely not.
Is it effective for me? Yes!
My cat is finally starting to put back on weight, has regular BM's, and has more energy than he has had in years. I hope this helped someone, and if anyone has any suggestions or objections for  me I would love to hear them!

I just told my husband I'm buying a coffee grinder. I have been in your shoes before and at a loss. I will definitely use your recipe in the future. Thank You. What a great idea!!!!!

When you get one, try and make sure it has an "espresso" setting. It seems to work the best for grinding and re-hydrating. But if you get one with multiple options you can always experiment to see what your kitties like best.

I've used kibble mush for sick/old ferrets before (ferrets are notorious for getting overly attached to one kind of food) and it does work great for those who won't eat anything else. Meat baby food (make sure there's no additives, just meat and broth, although Gerber's does have a bit or cornstarch but not enough to be a problem) is also good, it can really increase palatability.

You bring up a really good point! My cat hated baby food and has a limited interest in most broths, but if you can get your cats to eat it I've heard it works really well. Also, ferrets are just about the cutest little things ever. I call them furry little snake kittens <3
