There is this stray cat I've been trying to catch for about two weeks now. She'll come lay not far from me while I'm out on my patio but if I get up or extend my hand, she runs off. I've unsuccessfully tried to trap her. She is very pregnant. I've noticed her increase in size greatly over the last few weeks and when she's laying down (maybe 4-5 feet from me) I can see kittens moving around in her stomach. I just started noticing the movement about 3-4 days ago. Well tonight I wake up to what sounds like cats fighting in my backyard. I go to my office window and there she is in mating position with a male on top of her trying to mate. I go downstairs to make sure my eyes aren't playing with me and he wasnt biting her neck yet she wasnt going anywhere (I opened the door to try and break it up and he hissed at me so I went back in). Just there with here rear in the air and him on top of her. Then he bit her and judging by the sound and from how it looked, I think he was successful. He then jumped off, she tried to bar at him, she licked her parts then layed down.
This is a heavily pregnant cat. I mean I saw the kittens moving less than 24 hours ago. I'm guessing she's 7+ weeks because of that. Why would a pregnant cat come into heat again before she delivers her litter. And if she wasnt in heat, why would she allow a male to mate?
I'm desperate to trap this cat. We do have coyotes here and I've found a rescue willing to take her if I can trap her. Would hate for something to happen to her and her kittens. I've taken in a pregnant cat before but she was much more trusting of me and didnt run every time I budged. I might be in over my head with this one.

Exactly. I've never know a pregnant cat to go into heat which is why this is so strange. She's just allowing him to mate. It's been going on all morning. She puts her rear up in the air and just let's him have at it. She still looks heavily pregnant and I last saw kittens moving about 24 hours ago.
I've seen them mating 3 times in the last 5 hours and heard her let out that cry a few other times so this is very odd.

Although it's rare, a pregnant cat can go into heat, although it's usually earlier in the pregnancy. I am really not sure what's going on here. From your description of being able to see the kittens moving, she's probably less than 2 weeks from giving birth. What kind of a trap did you use to try to catch her? If she gives birth outside, you may never find the kittens. :(

It was a metal cage almost like a tiny dog crate that I rented for $5 a day from the humane society but after a week with no luck I took it back. I will be renting one again. She's really acting like she's in heat. When he walks close to her, she puts her rear up. I know my eyes aren't playing tricks on me. Her tummy is huge and my husband suspected she was pregnant about 3 weeks ago. I've just never heard of a pregnant cat being receptive of a male.

Is the mucus plug supposed to be green like this? Or does she have an infection? She was accepting that same male for a few days and now she's back to attacking him when he goes near her. This morning I noticed this almost string on discharge hanging from her private area but she couldn't lick it away. He just rubbed it on the ground sort of like a dog does when their rear itches. So I grabbed my paper towel and took a pic to see what you guys think. I was planning on renting a trap tomorrow but do I even have that much time?

Back again with a couple of questions. The cat had her kittens sometime within the last 5 days. I'm not completely sure when as I was in the hospital for 3 days after having my daughter. She had her kittens in a box I put in our shed last week with a wee wee pad and old receiving blanket. This morning I went outside to set some food out for her. I stepped back and out she came but it was horrible. She couldn't walk. She would take a step and then fall over and try again. This went on for 5 minutes and then she eventually was able to take a few steps (still not normal) without falling over, get to the food and water I set out. She ate all the wet kitten food and some of the dry. My husband peeked in on the kittens and he said there were 4-5 live kittens and one dead kitten that had either left the box on its own or she moved it out there. I couldn't even bring myself to look. Momma looks horrible but she still won't let me near her. I don't want to grab her when she falls over. The vet is closed today. She does seem to get a little better when away from the kittens for a few minutes. Do you think a lack a nutrition is causing this? Or maybe from her laying down in the same spot with kittens nursing for so long? The rescue that had been willing to take her is now full and the local shelter says if I trap her, they can take her but she and her kittens will most likely be out down. I have no idea what to do

She needs to be seen by a vet ASAP! It sounds to me like she could have a kitten stuck in the birth canal or an infection (or both.) Her not being able to walk is an EMERGENCY!

As for the dead kitten, momma had to have moved it. Kittens that young cannot move well enough to climb out. (Or that one was born outside the box, and, due to her deteriorating condition, she might not have moved to feed it.)

Part of the problem is trapping her. I can't rent another trap until tomorrow and she's managed to avoid my last two attempts. She's already lashed out at both me and my husband so i dont want to try to just grab her. She rubbed against my leg then tried to bite me about 2 weeks ago and last week she went after my husband and cut his hand pretty deep (it looked like he had a knife cut) when he was trying to give her fresh water. The kittens would be easy to grab but I don't know if its a good idea to seperate them from mom.

I agree if you can get her to a vet, so do it.   its really a must.    If there is any decent vet around, so its imperative.

Take thick clothes on you, gloves, glasses or googles...  So you feel yourelf safe.  Dont play with the trap.   Take the scruff-grip on her.

And or wrap her in a thick towel like in a burrito.  Wrapped in she will cease fighting.   If you can also cover her eyes it will be extra good for immobilizing her.   And in a carrier, with a towel on it, so the carrier is like a nice dark hidey hole.

If it is possible, prepare to take care of the kittens.  It may become necessary.   Get the gears, alike kmr or goat milk, dropper, bottle...

It may happen, when she is inside recovering and she sees you are helping her with the kittens, they socializing of her will go fast forward.  This is quite common, when you help a severly sick feral.

Good luck!
