Hey guys,

A handful of you know my backstory by now. My cat, Max, had to have a bladder stone removed. The vet failed to get it out on the first go though, and they had to open him up again. Then, in the subsequent days that followed, Max nearly died from lack of hydration and proper instruction from the vet. I managed to get the owner on the phone though and had all the aftercare work fees waived. They admitted their fault in it all and said "They were mortified." and that 'Changes would be made."

At this point, Max is home with me now for 2 weeks and has had a miraculous recovery. All with one little hang-up though: He hates the new food he has to eat.  The vet gave me a case of it. The brand is Hills and the recipe is "Prescription Diet. s/d Feline Dissolution."  It's an orange and white can, and some sort of pate. Here's a picture of it online:

At this point, I've tried a ton of tricks to get him to eat it. I've doused it with tuna fish. I've dripped some anchovy paste on it (only a little though, b/c I hear it may be too salty for cats). The only thing that really works is if I put some of his old Friskies in the same bowl. But even then, if I attempt to mix the Friskies with the Hills, he takes one sniff of it, and walks away. Instead, I have to split the food up in the bowl, and then he'll just eat the Friskies. The few times I've had success, are when I just leave the Hills food in his bowl all night. Then, in the morning, I'll sometimes see that he ate about half of it maybe.  But all in all, it's mostly been me having to throw out a lot of left-over Hills food in his bowl that he won't touch.

My concern here is that, a lack of moisture in his diet could be one of the things that led to the bladder stone in the first place. So yeah, I need him to start eating this stuff. Asap!

Are there any options for me that I haven't thought of? And have any of you had similar problems with Hills food?  If so, let me know if there's a different recipe they offer that he might like better.  Or a different brand of cat food that's just as safe for bladders, but maybe a little more enjoyable.

Thanks!

Granted, this isn't my area of expertise.
Hill's emphasizes that the s/d is low magnesium. You could research and ask your vet about another prescription canned food that would be comparable (Royal Canin, Iams, etc.). Or, if low magnesium is really the key, you could research canned foods with a low magnesium content (on a dry matter basis). Dave's makes a "restricted diet" canned food that is lower in magnesium, but it's still higher than the Hill's: http://davespetfood.com/product/restricted-diet-magnesium-phosphorus-pork-dinner-cats/

Hopefully someone with more experience in bladder stones and diet can chime in, since [I think] they are different from urinary crystals.

By the way, I just read through your other thread about Max's surgery. What a nerve-racking journey! I'm so glad that he is recovering well after all the scares.

Hi there,

Your Max is a real cutie. I have a cat named 'Max' as well

You could try Royal Canin Urinary S/O which is quite a popular urinary tract food. It also features pork as a protein source, but it may be more palatable than the Hills. I have never used any Hills food and so can't offer much insight there. Your vet may have the S/O in the clinic, or you can get this from Chewy.com : http://www.chewy.com/cat/royal-canin-veterinary-diet-urinary/dp/35159

I would suggest to pick up a can or two of the RC Urinary S/O, rather than a whole case, and see if your boy will like this. In addition, you should start adding a bit of water to the wet canned at each meal to increase his water intake.

Good luck. I hope that things can get back to normal for your boy.
