Thanks for taking in the kitty! She's so lucky to have found you, her Hero!

Are you planning on keeping her forever? Sounds like she's wormed her way into your home and heart.

VERY GOOD NEWS!  Sammie is FeLV and FIV negative, her temperature is normal and she has put on almost 1lb in weight in 6 days!  Medication to continue at a reduced dosage for 6 days and back to the vet in 8 days.  Luckily, it's okay for both medications to be crushed into food as any other method has been impossible.

As far as the shaved area is concerned, the vet said it could have been a lumbar puncture or an abscess on Sammie's back or a few other things BUT she says the patch was shaved no more than 3 - 4 months ago. This knowledge will be a great help in finding the vet who treated her and hopefully her owner.

Sammie did not lose balance or fall over when we put her on the floor to show the vet the symptoms we had described!   She had one little almost wobble but the vet said as she seemed okay in herself, not to worry too much about that.  There will be time to investigate this further and maybe I can do a video to show exactly what happens.

I've seen lots of videos now of sweet little kitties with CH. The cats themselves don't know they have a handicap and their lives are not shortened because of it so it's not a problem if this is Sammy's condition.  But my greatest wish is to find her owner.  The vet has agreed to help me try to trace the vet who shaved Sammy's back, a little reluctantly but still.  Onwards and upwards!
GREAT news all around!

Honestly, if we put ourselves in someone else's shoes, that this is their cat, maybe escaped out of a carrier when the door wasn't latched correctly, upon returning from a stressful vet visit for instance, they might be just heartsick for their baby to be home. I KNOW I would.

It does not sound to me like anyone who owns this cat, paid costly vet bills, etc would simply abandon her. From all the evidence, and her starved, weakened state tell a story to me that someone out there loves her a great deal, and isn't sleeping at night without their cat safe at home with them, and she somehow got herself out there and lost, thankfully finding a guardian angel as the OP clearly is :)

This is exactly why, 2 years ago I added microchipping ALL my rescue cats before they are adopted out. Microchips do not only save lives but also reunite lost pets with their owners.

Good luck! I hope the search through finding the vet who treated her gets her back to her owners arms!

I am just now reading this thread.  Bless you for caring for this sweet girl. I hope the vet can find some history on her somewhere in the area, like you said.  I know you are trying to find her owner, but frankly,

I wouldn't want to return her to anyone who gave her away!  (Especially in that condition)

Best of luck in finding a diagnosis for her.  I think she was left with you for a reason.
Lots of vibes on her being healthy, & negative w/ the other test, so she can be integrated with your kitties!

Edit:  I just saw updates after posting this, Yay!! So glad the test came back negative!

Great that she can now meet your cats. I really do hope you dont find the owner. Is she a kitten or a small elderly cat.
She's certainly a miraculous kitty.

These are exactly my thoughts and hopes.  If I lost one of my cats, I would hope someone would do for them what I've done for Sammie.  Even the most attentive owners can have accidents like those described above.  We must remember that not everyone is internet savvy, especially (French) elderly people.  It's a matter of trying to find the owner by means other than the internet which can be a slow, laborious, hit-and-miss process.

Keeping Sammie as an interior cat, which I believe would be essential because of her condition, would be very problematic in a household of 3 outdoor cats.

Hello again.  Sammie is doing fine and is slowly being integrated with our cats (no sign of owner and we're very attached now).  But I think she's just come on heat.  As she's ten years old, would it be dangerous for her to be sterilised while she's on heat?  The vet gave us an appointment for the op on Thursday but I'm thinking now it might be better to wait.

I don't know anything about an older cat and being spayed, but I just wanted to say that I'm glad she's found a home. :)

It's actually a very good thing to get her spayed asap.

She is a high risk of uterus infection due to her age.

I send females who are in heat to be spayed, no problem.

The only time it should ever be delayed is if a cat is sick or still producing milk.

Anytime a cat goes under general anesthesia there is a risk, but vets can perform tests where they can say that "there is no increased risk that I see" but age remains a factor and I would discuss the pro's and con's with your vet before committing.  Also, a second opinion is often helpful.  If you put 3 vets in a room together, you will often get 3 different opinions, not because one is right and the other is  wrong, but because medicine is as much art as it is science.  And as such, the decision that you make is also an "artistic choice" in a sense, and better to see 3 paintings before you pick your favorite.

Thank you for your replies.  I already discussed sterilisation with my vet last week when she gave Sammie a clean bill of health.  Well, I asked first whether she could tell if Sammie had been spayed.  Sadly no way of telling but that we'd know the answer if Sammie came on heat.  She said if that happened, the op could be performed without delay. When I rang with the news yesterday I was able to speak directly to our vet and she booked Sammie in for Thursday.  It's just since then I've been reading up on the subject and having doubts.

Only 2 paintings to choose from in this case, Stephen.

Sammie is just beside herself, in a state of absolute torment almost all her waking hours.  I feel so sorry that she's been subjected to this so often throughout her 10 years.  For that reason and also catwoman707's experience with a great number of cats, I think we'll keep Thursday's appointment.  Thank you for helping me reach a conclusion.

Mycatwasthebest - I don't understand your comment.  Please explain what isn't this girl the definition of "sick"? means.

It's strange that someone would have a female cat for ten years or more and not get her spayed. I wonder if she was used fro breeding? Maybe this would be a way of tracing her original owners?

I hope everything goes well at the vet's this week.

Frankly I don't understand why you want to find the owner unless you don't want to keep this poor kitty.
She doesn't deserve to have kitty you have taken such care of and spent goodness knows how much money on her. It sounds quite like a breeder would get rid of a problematic cat when no longer needed. I'm not talking about reputable breeders.
Please don't look for the previous owner.

The operation went very well and Sammie also had her first vaccination and an electronic ID implanted.  She is now definitely permanently ours. Her age has been revised to between 6 - 8 years so I'm pleased to think we'll have her for a few years longer.  Sammie is staying indoors until the stitches come out next Monday but afterwards she will be able to go into the garden under supervision as it's fully fenced and, because of her handicap, high enough to stop her escaping. She's still upstairs most of the time while convalescing but comes down a couple of times a day to "mix with the residents".  It's funny that Leo, big boss cat, who I thought would cause most problems just gave Sammie one look and then ignored her.  Mollie, mother of the other 2, is less happy but she's generally pretty grumpy except with humans.  My darling Tabby who just wants a quiet life watches curiously from a distance.  I think they'll all settle down fine.

I had to reread the whole thread to refresh my memory, and I had to look up "paresis." Is that still a possibility? Is there a test for it? If she was used for breeding (or was the product of it) I guess the possibility of having it would be higher?

just curious, but so glad all is well

@Siami....Its great that you decided to keep her, and I think that "cat crew" of yours with Leo, Mollie and even quiet Tabby are also amazing.  You are such a caring, thoughtful person, who Sammie is so lucky to have found.  Best Regards.
