Hi,
I haven't posted here in a while, but I could really use some advice.
I just adopted a cat from a shelter. He's about 8 months old and super friendly, but he's having some problems with loose stools. I'm trying to determine the cause of it so I can help him, but it is very frustrating.
A little information:
When he arrived at my house, he had just had a deworming and his last two booster vaccine shots. The woman from the shelter drove him to my house and said that he had loose stool at the shelter the day before she brought him to me.
I put the cat in his "safe room" and gave him the food they said they were feeding him at the shelter. It's purina one chicken and rice for adults. she told me to slowly mix the other cat's food in with the purina one to get him used to it, so I started doing that. The cat wouldn't touch the food that had my other cat's food mixed in, though (organix)
I tried to mix in a bit of kitten chow, too, but the cat wasn't having any of that, either.
She also gave me a can of seafood fancy feast. I was under the impression that they were feeding the cats this at the shelter, so I was giving him this at night. Apparently this was just a treat that she had given me and the cat wasn't eating this at the shelter, so I've stopped giving him this.
Anyway, we have another cat and my husband and i have been introducing them. The introductions seemed to be going well, there was a bit of growling, bu they mostly have tolerated each other. The younger cat is a little afraid of the older cat right now, but there hasn't even been any fighting.
On Sunday, the new cat, Diego, began to throw up. He would go into the litter and try to go and then throw up. He was farting a lot and his ... erm... poop smelled REALLY bad.
We thought he had a blockage, so we rushed him to the emergency vet and 290 dollars later, he had no blockage, but he was diagnosed with gastroenteritis. They did xrays and did a stool sample and everything came back normal, no worms or anything... with the exception of him having a lot of gas in his body. They told me to put him on a bland diet of chicken and rice and they gave him something to calm his stomach.
After he came back to the vet, he was absolutely starving. We gave him some of the chicken and rice and he gobbled it down in two seconds. They also gave us some probiotics (fortiflora) to help him with his tummy. We've been feeding him smaller meals of just chicken and rice since sunday.
At the emergency vet, he was given famotidine and cerenia to help him out.
His stool was starting to be sort of formed, but then last night, it was runny again. I fed him chicken and rice this morning and for lunch again, and he immediately went into the litter and had a light colored, loose stool.
He seems a bit lethargic today, sleeping a lot, but then again, he's a cat, so I have no idea if it's just him being a cat or if it's him being genuinely sick.
I'm kind of at my wit's end because I'm not really sure what to do or what could be causing it. I'm actually kind of afraid that it's the stress of being with the other cat. The woman at the vet rescue says she wants to take him back to the shelter if he's ill because she didn't want to adopt out an ill cat.
I'm just wondering what I can do. I just lost a cat back in January because he wasn't eating, so this is giving me bad flash backs of that. Any help that anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.
