My cat recently had kittens and all the kittens have been happy and healthy. But a few days ago, I noticed one of the kittens kept twitching its eyes and it could barely open them. When I got a closer look at its eyes I noticed it had this green gungey mucas in the corner of its eye. As soon as I noticed it I carefully cleaned its eyes out and thought that it was the end of its eye troubles. But the next day for three days I discovered that the green mucas had come back along with some redness of its eye. Do you think it is conjunctivitis? Or eye problems? Should I take her to the vets??? What do you think it is. Have any of you guys had the same thing with your cat's? Please help!!!

Thanks

This is VERY common in kittens.

It's bacterial and is easily treated with terramycin eye ointment, but will not go away on it's own or by cleaning it.

It takes an antibacterial ointment made especially for eyes to get rid of it.

I do suggest seeing your vet for some.

Hi @mollomint

How old are the kittens?

Has there been any sneezing?

The kitten has most likely come down with an upper respiratory infection and will need treatment and supportive care.  The other kittens may break with it too.

Yes a vet visit is in order, the kitten will need eye drops, and can have scar tissue form on the eye if this isn't treated.

The vet may put the kitten on an antibiotic to make sure the cold doesn't get into her lungs.

You're good to notice this, now its time for a vet!

Any discolored discharge warrants a trip to the vet.  Sounds like there's an infection going on and it could possibly spread to the other kitten and the mom.

Actually the bacterial eye infection IS highly contagious, it's not dangerous as in causing damage unless it's not treated properly.

Any symptoms on top of this is usually a uri, but eye infections commonly happen without a uri as well.

Not really!  The vet is going to want to prescribe a feline eye cream or drops, and that requires a vet visit.  Then you can provide the care at home.

Have the kittens been to a vet yet?  They need the FVRCP vaccine which is usually given at 8, 12, and 16 weeks (nut not to a sick kitten), they will need deworming, and testing for FIV/FeLV (unless you know the dad cat very very well).  And of course when mom is ready we would always encourage her to get spayed, for her future health, and for all the homeless kittens that aren't getting homes.

You really want to get it to the vet as these types of infections can lead to life-long eye problems and even eye removals if allowed to remain untreated.

It's very common for kittens to get bacterial eye infections that spread like wildfire from one kitten to the next. Call the vet, explain things and say you want to buy an eye ointment over the counter. You can get lysine treats on Amazon that would treat the symptoms too, plus build up the immune system. Good luck!

The kittens went to a cat vet centre and I found out it was conjunctivitis. The kitten got some eye cream for it.

Good job!  Glad you got some meds for the little one and hopefully they'll be on the mend soon.
