Thank you for taking her to a vet. I'm sure it wasn't easy for you to do it, but you clearly did the right thing. I'll be thinking of you & Knuckles (love the name, btw) today and hoping she feels much better :) Please keep us updated. When a kitty is sick, we all feel your pain.

I don't have the best experience with doctors. The mis-diagnosed me 25 years ago and nearly killed me. They mis-diagnosed my cat "Lefty" is 2012 an DID kill him. 2-1/2 later, they mis-diagnosed my mother and killed her too three weeks ago.

I just returned from the vet. He discovered blood when he took her temperature rectally, blood around her eyes and bruising on her tongue. He told me to rush her to the Emergency Animal Hospital fearing she's bleeding internally and might bleed-out to death by morning. She's at the Vet ER now and will spend at least one night if not more there. Her blood-count is low from all the vomiting (only three times, but enough for a small cat) so she's not clotting. No clue what caused the vomiting to begin with but an x-ray showed no obstruction. They will do an ultrasound in the morning. The vet will give her an IV to restore the fluids lost from vomiting so much, so I expect her to feel much better tomorrow.

Having another... family member... deathly ill after just losing two in close succession is almost more than I can bear.

I'm praying for your baby!!!

I don't understand why she has to be rushed to an Animal Emergency Hospital if she was at the vets. Animal E.R.'s are usually after hr clinics. Why couldn't you're vet treat her?

I pray they figure out what is wrong with her. Please keep us posted..

I know one of the ERs here also has specialist referral clinics.  They have the ultrasound equipment there as well as a full in house lab.  Another ER is connected with the university vet school.  The vet may have thought that it would be better if the kitty was where they could do all diagnostics in house and  get results quicker.

Thank You for answering. I had never heard of a vet doing that.

I really hope your cat feels better. I knkw how you feel some vets are not the greatest. I took 2 little kittens to one and the vet said they were fine. Well turns out they werent fine. I lost 6 kittens to parvo. I have 1 surviror with me today. But i found a new vet for him and have been taking him there. He got sick last night and i rushed him to the emergency clinic. So always take your cats or kittens somewhere if the condition is bad. You can look up reviews too. I wish you all the luck. Sending knuckles my love!!!

Her condition required a specialist. According to the vet, she was bleeding internally and might not live through the night if I waited till the next day to get her to one.

The Emergency Animal Clinic says her current condition appears stable and she did not vomit again over night, but will be doing an Ultrasound today to see if she is still bleeding internally.

Thx.

PS: I'm still wracking my brain trying to figure out what caused all this. Never went outside. No bugs in the house. Didn't eat anything she wasn't supposed to.

Thx. The fact that her brother went through almost the exact same thing a year ago has me the most concerned.

I'm a far wiser cat owner today because of it though.

I'm so sorry you're going through this and so is Knuckles!
You said her brother has ulcers. Did you mention that to the vet? I know certain viruses can cause ulcers. They can become exposed from their mother and carry the virus for yrs. Just remain dormant and then it kind of wake up.

Sometimes no matter how well we try to protect them and keep them safe things happen beyond our control.

Please keep us posted. I'm praying for your baby!!!!

Note to everybody:

Knuckles is still in the hospital. Last night her sister threw up (she's fine now.)

I believe I have some tainted Chinese cat food on my hands. I started a thread with more details here.

Thanks for the follow-up.

Knuckles is still at the Emergency Hospital and stable. Her blood-count has been dangerously low (about 15% of where it should be) due to internal hemorrhaging from the Salmonella and she has received two blood transfusions already.

But I visited her yesterday and was able to get her to eat her first solid food in 5 days. She hasn't vomited again since she was hospitalized and the vet says if her blood count shows sign of recovery, I should be able to bring her back home in a day or two.

I'm about to call know to hear the results of her latest blood test. I'm also calling a lab to have her food tested for Salmonella. If positive, "Meow Mix" will be paying this hospital bill.

Thanks again for asking.

Oh the poor thing! I'm glad she's stable, but I really hope they've gotten the internal bleeding under control! :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes: :vibes:

Has it been confirmed it's salmonella?

Not by test, but the list of symptoms reads like her autobiography:

acute vomiting

fever

"low platelet/blood count" (also listed as "loss of blood")

drooling

loss of appetite

blood in stool (she's not pooping but there was blood on the rectal thermometer.)

weight loss

dehydration

fast heart rate

"Diarrhea" is also a key symptom, which we don't see because she's not pooping (from not eating), but the CDC website says:

"Some cats do not have diarrhea, but will have a decreased appetite, fever, and excess salivation."

The vet has not given a diagnosis of Salmonella, but based on all those symptoms, there is no doubt in my mind that's what it is.

Thanks. Just brought Knuckles home for the weekend. I was able to get her to eat while the vet could not, so they felt she would do better at home over the weekend.

I thought you might be interested in a photo:

Knuckles home from the vet.

This particular hospital is too far and WAY too expensive (total cost to date: over $3,100 since Monday. I was given her meds for the weekend and will find a local vet that can do her blood test Monday.

I'm also still searching for a lab that will test her food for Salmonella. As soon as they hear "commercial pet food", I'm redirected to the FDA. :(

Here is what the trio looked like (her with sister and her late brother) just days after I found them huddled under the hood of my car in 2006:

Mugsy, Knuckles & Lefty (deceased).

Thx for the follow-up.
