Hi cat site! I'm really excited about joining today. I thought I should introduce myself, because that's only polite, right?
My cat journey begins when I was 4 years old, my family adopted our first cat from the local shelter, and over the years our family grew to four kitties by the time I was a teenager! Our first was the sweetest little calico, Puppet. The second was a red tabby stray who adopted us, Mickey. Then came the sweet but slow Maine Coon, Mau. The last, our only cat who we adopted as a kitten, spunky and now very portly Conan. The only one still with us now is Conan, unfortunately the others have passed on from old age. I'm 28 now, so Conan lives with my parents and brother (he is primarily my brother's kitty).
I had a kitty-shaped hole in my heart since I moved out of my parent's house. I have lived in apartments since moving out, so having a cat was not very feasible between limited space (at one point my husband, two children and I were in a two bedroom apartment! too small!) and high deposit fees. Last year, we moved into a lovely 3-bedroom duplex.
Around Christmas time I kept jokingly asking my husband if he was getting me a kitten for Christmas. This was a joke because I had the misfortune of marrying a man who does not like cats very much. He kept vehemently telling me "No, we are not getting a cat, not for a long time. Maybe when we have a house someday," and went as far as to tell me he "hates cats."
Don't worry, this story has a happy ending.
Come Christmas dinner with my parents, when we were opening presents, he presents his laptop to me with an E-mail he got... from one of the kitties at the local shelter, telling me to come adopt him! So, for Christmas, I was given the gift of going to the shelter to find a kitty purrfect for our family! The first shelter we went to barely had any cats left right after Christmas, and none that would be good with children. So we went to the second shelter.
At the second shelter, I peered and petted several kitties in their kennels. One that I poked my fingers through to pet started "murr"-ing at me right away. This little girl seemed so sweet! I asked to see her. They did not have any of the kitty "meeting areas" available, but the volunteers consulted... "It's Maude, she can just hold her out here, right?" After a confirmation they brought her to me and put her in my arms. There she sat and "murr"ed and purred. It was love at first sight!
Here is my sweet girl, Maude! We kept her shelter name, because, as my daughter pointed out, she seems to respond to and like it. She is 10 years young. She loves to "talk" a ton, loves to be petted and held and is just the sweetest lovebug ever! She is a brown tabby with a unique white spot on her back. I love her very much and look forward to posting about her, and seeing everyone else's kitties, too!
