Please note that all cats are pregnant for 9wks (63 days) from point of conception. You should be able to feel kittens move in their mums tums from 6-7 wks of pregnancy. If you feel movement you know ur cat has upto 2-3wks of her pregnancy remaining.
Expectant mums need a safe warm quiet place to deliver and raise her young so please be prepared.New mums have been known to move their young if they feel they are threatened or un-safe to a place where they think is safer and this could be anywhere. Please ensure you have a safe enviroment, preferably a large box with bedding used from your old clothes as your scent makes them feel safe put in a darkish warm place in your home so the expectant mum can deliver her babies with piece of mind.
If you can try to over see each delivery of kitten. Mum may become tired depending on whether its her first litter or how many babies she is expecting. Be prepared to step in and do what a mum should do by making sure the newborns airways are clear and the sack is removed. If a kitten isn't breathing make sure there mouth and nose are clear, wrap in a towel and rub vigoursly. This replicates what mum should do and will encourage the heart to start. As soon as the baby is breathing place kitten on mums nipple so that it can start suckling mums milk.
A kitten generally opens its eyes around 8-12 days after birth. All kittens are born with blue eyes but will change to there adult colour within 3wks. By the 3rd wk the new kittens will be getting curious and start wandering around. On the 4th week kittens can start to be litter trained and also a small amount of kitten foor and water can be introduced although mum will still be feeding. Mum may find this week hard as their teeth are starting to form.
By week 5-6 the kittens are very independant and not so reliable on mum. They will be playful mobile and a handful. They should now be most reliable on solid food and water. Each kitten should be able to clean itself and be less dependant on mum. Mum will start to show less of an interest and if fully weaned kittens will be ready to re-home. Kittens can be ready to re-home from 6wks- 12 wks depending on individual independance.
