So I desperately needed a new phone and decided that it was time to cross over to the I Phone world.......I activated my first I Phone today, an I Phone 4S. It definitely was a challenge to set up, but I  love it so far!

I can't imagine!  I don't have a smartphone and I don't see myself getting one anytime soon.  My mother even has a fancier phone than I do!  I've had to ask her how to use hers!  Talk about a role reversal!  I used to be the one explaining all the new technology!

Have fun with your new "toy"!

Dh went "darkside" yesterday
I had to go "darkside 2 months ago
.  We both had Droids.  Mine quit keeping a charge- dh's phone wasn't letting him make phone calls.

The girls got them at Christmas.  It's what they wanted.  I got mine so that it was easier to text the college kid (and the other one).  I have to admit, my college kid is a whole lot better at texting me than she is calling me (though I've now had 2 facetime chats with her

I guess dh getting it was kind of a moot point.  We were on a plan where we didn't get texting- but had unlimited data.  Which of course went away yesterday.  Now we have unlimited talk and texting, and 8GB of data for the 4 of us to share.  As long as my youngest uses Wifi for most everything we should be ok (she is the texting queen )

There's good things/bad things.  My biggest complaint is that Apple is a pain about sharing apps.  There's apps that my Kindle has that my phone doesn't / and vice versa.  iTunes is kind of annoying too.  But it's the only way we've got our music organized, only way we've bought music for the last few years (kids did most of the buying and they've had iPods for years).  And I admit- Apple's iTunes is really easy to use. I don't "get" how to do mp3's.  Which is how Amazon sells its music.   And again, I can't get iTunes for my Kindle.

I don't know if this will make us "forever" Apple users or not.  I might just go and make the phone a big iPod when the time comes to upgrade (and Apple's a pain about that too- their phones last about 2 years before they get too slow and the phone is useless for anything but music)

We also got rid of the landline a year ago.  The kids had phones, the only calls I was getting on the landline anyways were all telemarketers.  What's the point of spending another $120/year for a landline when we spend $200/month on a cell phone plan?

I have never even been tempted by the iPhones.  I just got my second smart phone about a week ago.  Was told the iPhone was on sale for $100 or some such and I just said I wasn't interested.  But I do hope you enjoy yours.

I'm bumping this to see what you think after a few weeks @cheylink?

DH and I are getting iphones this week.  I never thought I'd see the day.  My current cell is almost 4 years old.  DH said he pulled his phone out at work the other day and one of the guys said "Hey dude; Thomas Jefferson called and he wants his phone back."
DH worked it so it's not TOO much more than we were paying.  And the phones ended up being free with our upgrade.  I'm just not sure how fast you go through data.  I'm home most of the time anyway.

We've been looking at cases online.  DH needs something rugged.  I'm not sure what style case I should look for.  There are so many to look at and chose from!!

If you use your home wireless network or local WiFi hotspots when out and about you don't use much phone data anyway. Most of my data use comes from my phone deciding any time I'm not at home is the perfect time to update all my apps. Grr, technology. The only thing to watch out for would be anything like YouTube or Netflix when not connected to a network.

As for cases, the OtterBox is the way to go. One of my college professors told a story about how he accidentally ran over his phone with a truck once--it was fine. More recently, my boss accidentally washed his phone. Also fine. Both had OtterBox cases. The case will probably last longer than your phone does.

Be prepared to be addicted :lol3:

I had my first iphone 4 two years ago and I loved it  So last year I brought myself an ipad and I've just upgraded a month ago to an iphone 5.

I wouldn't have any other phone now  I personally don't think anything else compares

Every iPhone user I know loves their LifeProof cases.  Waterproof is awesome.

Thank you that is very helpful! I feel so ignorant about these things since we've avoided them for so long. Lol

It looks like we need the lifeproof case. The otter box for the 5c has bad reviews and isn't waterproof. I may get away with a simple case; but DH definitely needs one.

I'm excited to get it and try it all out! Come on Tuesday!! But then I need to get it activated and all too. Patience... Lol

I only have a simple case from target for myself. I've also heard a lot of good things about Otterbox, but I have a 4s.

Yeah, GemsGem GemsGem . I am addicted to my IPad.:lol3:

Oh, I would not go for the 5c.
I would go for the 5s it much better and does more than the 5c.
I don't really have a choice unless I can exchange before we set it up.  We went with those basically because they were free (and DH was the one working on it all).  I'm not TOO worried I'll be disappointed because we are new to smartphones but also I'm home all the time.  I use the desktop for things the most and my Kindle Fire whenever I'm not at the desktop.  The times I have found myself wishing for a smartphone are like when we have bad storms in the area (because I also don't have cable tv to get the local weather alerts) and if we are out somewhere and want to look up a menu or something to order takeout before we go home.  I haven't looked for anything to really compare the 5c to the 5s.  I did figure if we were getting it for free; it wasn't the top of the line one.

I'm not gonna lie; I'm super excited to be able to text without issue.  Right now if people try to text with a fun font or fancy smileys; all I see are squares for each letter.  It's fun to explain that.

I am thinking I might be ok with one of the less fancy cases.  Maybe something middle of the road like the slimmer OtterBox ones.  I like the pretty inexpensive silicone ones.  I'm just afraid it's not going to offer any protection.

MoochNNoodles- you really don't go through data that fast.  Unless you're downloading movies and such.  But you can't store many movies on it anyways.  Why?  Because I had 2 of them on my phone (was playing with a disney app and got Frozen and Incredibles) and it ate up almost half my space on the phone
.  Between the 4 of us we have 8MB of data and we don't use it all in one month.  I was worried when the 17 year old went to NYC for the weekend on a school trip but she wound up not using tons of it.

Texting is nice.  I have teenagers that text.  A LOT.
They iMessage me all the time.  And it's nice being able to "talk" to the one that's in college 9 months out of the year.

Youngest has a Lifeproof case on hers.  But she also dropped it in water less than a week after she'd gotten it
.  We rescued and fixed it, but she went and spent all of her Christmas money on that b/c she can be very hard on electronics.  And I do NOT want to have to replace it before the contract is up.

The whole family has the 5C.

Thanks; I'm probably being a little paranoid about the data...and I haven't left the house with it yet.
So far I like it!  I set mine up last night and got to have a long text-chat with my SIL today.  I set DH's up when he got home from work tonight and he installed it in the Lifeproof case.  I still need to get a better case for mine.  I am disappointed in the case options for it; but thats such a minor thing in the scheme of things.

You should be able to set it up to automatically warn you when you're using too much of your data if you'd like the extra peace of mind. You can also delay or stop apps from auto refreshing, such as email. That can eat a lot of data up if you get a lot of them, at least according to my boss. But then again he's a store manager so the volume of email he gets is pretty far above average home use lol. For myself, in the past month I've used less than 10% of my 4 GB data plan including email, web browsing, even streaming radio at work occasionally.

hm.  I'm going to have to look into that too.  I keep laughing because I'm looking at the manual on how to do some stuff.
right now I don't have my e-mail set to go on it so that might help.  I did accidentally download a bunch of old music I bought a few years ago.
