I just took in a stray cat. she will not eat or drink.  the kids who gave her to me said she was eating lots of grass in their yard.  she seems gentle and lost.  in the meantime she will not eat or even drink. what should I do?  it is 1:00 am here and the vet will not be open until 10:00 am tomorrow. any suggestions?

Bless you for taking in that poor kitty
Dehydration is a real concern, so you can try giving her some homemade "pedialyte" (good recipe @ kitten-rescue.com), which will help stabilize her electrolytes plus the sugar will provide energy.  If she hasnt eaten in awhile, food may aggravate her tummy so chicken broth is also a better option. Since she isn't drinking on her own, you can try a drop or two at time, using an eyedropper or a plastic spoon.

Slow & easy is the trick - keep her warm and quiet, give her the fluids gradually, and a cozy place to rest (she may prefer to lie next to you otherwise a small, confined space such as the bathroom usu works out well).

BTW, in my experience, plain water can aggravate an upset tummy, so at least add a teaspoon of sugar & a pinch of salt & a pinch of baking soda to 8-10oz water (preferably bottled, not tap, if you don't have your own well).

Please keep us updated on her/your progress
