Are the sides of the litter trays low enough that the kittens can get into it easily ?

Yes, the sides of the litter tray are low enough for the kittens to get in. They all play in the litter tray so I know they can get into it. Do you think they will learn soon enough? Any advice on teaching them?

Hmmm, I'm thinking it might be the type of litter you are using. What type do you use ? Have you tried other types ?

I'm using Heritage clumping cat litter. And I haven't yet tried any other. Do you have any cats? If so then what cat litter do you use?

I wouldn't use clumping cat litter for kittens. They sometimes try and eat it and the clumping kind can clog up their bellies and they are not able to pass it - meaning expensive surgery

For kittens I use a non-clumping kind like Sanicat / sophisticat. A lot of shops have their own makes of non- clumping too. Look of one which is also light weight as this is easier for kittens to dig into.

You need to be their mother. You have to teach them what to do. They're not sure what's going on. You didn't say whether the mama cat is with them?

Put a kitten into the box. Take his front paw and (gently) scratch at the litter. Hopefully they'll get the idea. Put each kitten in the litter box after the kitten has eaten and after the kitten awakens from a nap. Sometimes after a good playing session, too. Those are the times when (at least my) cats will use the box. My cats also like to use the box early in the morning, before they're had breakfast. You might want to get another box or even have three for the kittens.

I know it's a pain to have to teach them, but take the time. It's much better for them and for you in the long run.

We had five kittens. Their mother did teach them litter box habits, but I also helped, by doing what I mentioned above. After they woke up, after they ate anything, and after playing. One or two kittens at a time. Into the litter box they went.

We also brought Mollipop into the house and Tabby, too, when they were just kittens. And I did the same thing with both of them. Mollipop was well-trained to the box as we got her from a vet. But Tabby was a stray kitten, so I had to be her mama. We kept her in her own room (our computer room) for a while in a large cage with her litter box inside. It took her a while, but she got the hang of it all.

Good luck!

Usually the mama cat will train her kittens to use the litter box, but if she doesn't, then it's up to you. Try what I suggested and see if that helps the babies to understand.

I'm from the US, so I can't take any of the babies. I wish I could.

My 4 month old male kitten uses his litter tray but doesn't have a clue about covering up his mess . He scratches the sides of the litter tray and sometimes sits outside of it and empties litter onto the floor . I bought a covered litter tray hoping this would help but he still sits outside it scratching the litter till its outside the tray! My other male cat also struggled to cover up his mess and his sister would do it for him ! Is it just a male thing ? Surely not , maybe more training is needed ? Any thoughts please [emoji]128571[/emoji]
