I have numerous cats. They all like to dip their paws in the water. While it's a pain for me, I let them because it's normal. However, one of them, Nicodemus, has started putting his whole face in the water dish. He's only 10 months old. It's one of those that you fill up a bottle and it drains slowly as they drink it. None of his 3 siblings that I also own do it. I actually have an appointment to take him to the vet because I think he gave himself pneumonia or an URI doing it as he has started wheezing. Any advice on how to stop him from doing this.

Well, Nicodemus may have pneumonia. He's on antibiotics and his wheezing has stopped. Not to find a way to keep his face out of the water dish.

Poor baby; sorry he is sick!  Have you considered a cat fountain?  Mooch likes to splash and she used to soak the wall and the floor with it. She'd splash and drink a bit then splash and drink.  I found out that cats often have trouble seeing things so up close so they splash and the movement helps them judge the water's location.  We invested in a Petmate fountain and she rarely splashes now.  I've also heard of using the large glass aquarium pebbles or marbles in the water to help them see it better.  Just be sure that it's safe for food use.

I hope Nicodemus is feeling better soon!

Thank you. I hadn't thought about a fountain. I just need to find one that will work for 7 cats. Otherwise we will be refilling it every hour. Since Nicodemus and 4 of my other cats are Maine Coon mixes they all play in water. He's just the only one who thinks his face should go in it. He's doing okay. The wheezing has stopped with the medication. He's still playing and thus far hasn't stuck his face in the water, just his paw which is normal. Now to go search fountains. Thank you again.

Good luck!  The Petmate one I have has a tank so that helps it hold more.  I think there are some larger options too.  We are on our 2nd fountain. The first lasted over 5 years; so I think we got our moneys worth out of it.

We have three Main Coons and a fountain. They only start playing in it when I'm refilling. #1000 on a fountain. Ours holds about 1 gallon of water and it's a godsend.

We are waiting for the delivery, but I found a 3.5 gallon one that ripples. I am so hoping it will stop his need of dipping his face.

Well, the fountain has worked. He is no longer face planting in the water going after the bubbles. Thank you soooo much for the advice. I still catch him sticking his paws in it along with the other Maine Coons and my Abby mix. They even started chirping at it. It's soo cute. Thankfully he is all better and only had to do one round of antibiotics. YAY!.
