I decided to take Sophie to the out of hours vet after all because she was holding up her leg like she was in pain and I do worry about my little girls! Turns out though that it's fine and the stitches aren't broken it's just the way it's healing making it look a bit like it.. I'm quite relieved everything is ok with her.. I think I worry too much sometimes, but I guess it's better to be safe than sorry!

The vet also looked at the area where her spay is and said that looks fine too :)

Just thought I'd post an update :) They both had their stitches taken out on Friday and nicely healed up! Sophie's leg is also fully healed now so they can finally be allowed to run around playing and have the cat tree back in the living room! They absolutely love the cat tree and they'll snuggle up to each other in the basket all the time! When the cat tree was moved to another room so they couldn't get to it, they didn't really cuddle much :(

Here's a pic I just took of some kitty spooning! lol

I'm really pleased everything is back to normal finally! It's been ages since things were normal because of Sophie breaking her leg.. I'm so glad it's over though! :)

Also I'm just wondering if anyone knows... In women when they go through the menopause and stop producing estrogen, they'll often take HRT to prevent things like osteoporosis... Does anyone know if this is a risk for spayed cat's too?

ADORABLE TIMES 10!!!

I've never heard of this being an issue with cats...ever.  I think its a non-issue, but an interesting question.  Maybe you can ask your vet at the next visit and give us an update!

Great update, and they look absolutely adorable! I have no idea about the HRT, though I imagine a good diet goes a long way to reducing the risk of osteoporosis.

I'm so glad everything went all right! Please post if you have any questions about post op care, but the main thing is to watch for infection (which rarely happens), heat at the site, oozing that is not clear, and extreme swelling. You may feel or see a 'lump' at the site, that is normal, it is swelling on the inside from stitches in there and inflammation, I remember I freaked out when I saw that on my Chrissy. Good luck, and keep posting!
I was just hoping to ask a question about the lump. It's been 2 weeks now since my little girls were spayed, and just yesterday I noticed 2 lumps under Sophie's skin where the cut was. I tend to worry easily and so I phoned the vet to see if they know if it's normal but they just said they cant give advice over the phone and I'd need to book an appointment, but right now money is tight so I don't want to spend the money on a consultation just to be told it's a normal part of the healing.. I don't mind spending the money though if isn't normal though because my girls mean the world to me.. I'm just wondering if anyone can say if this is normal at almost 2 weeks post op?

Thank you,

Sarah

Edit: Also, there's no redness around the area so I doubt there's any infection there.

I'm guessing that these are where they tied off the incision but maybe you can take a photo?  The usual concerns are redness, swelling, oozing, or separation of the skin when sutured.

The lump underneath can take weeks to disappear, I remember my Chrissy's taking well over a month. But since it is an 'inside' problem now and you can't see underneath the skin, watch her carefully for any signs of changes in her behavior, is she sleeping a lot more, has she stopped eating as much, basically signs of illness. Feel the area, is it hot? Is it painful? If she is acting fine, just observe her for any of the above signs. I know it's hard not to worry, spaying is always a lot more traumatic and takes a lot longer for them to heal, unlike neutering. I hope everything goes well, as long as she is acting normally, it should be alright!

I'm glad Sophie's incision isn't red. Our cat whose incision healed slower was also lumpy for at least a couple weeks, which (of course!) worried me, too, though she was active, eating, and not displaying any signs of discomfort. I checked the incision every day... and then one day it looked almost as flat as the other cat's incision had looked from almost the beginning. I think the comparison in the two cats' healing rates is what concerned me the most with the laggard! Good luck!

I would think a post-op check-up should be included in the price of surgery

if your vet doesn't think so tell him/her I SAID SO!!!
